Argentina striker Carlos Tevez has confirmed Manchester City’s worst fears by saying he must leave the club to spend more time with his children, according to an interview with the Daily Mail.
City captain Tevez led the northwest side to FA Cup glory and qualification for the Champions League last season, but all the while he did so while living apart from his young daughters.
He is currently playing for Argentina at the Copa America, but in a statement published on the Mail’s Web site on Monday, Tevez said: “It is with great regret that I have to inform Manchester City of my wish to leave the club.”
“I would like to state that I have great respect for the club, its supporters and the owner, Sheikh Mansoor, who has been nothing other than respectful to me,” he said. “I hope that the people understand the difficult circumstances I have been living under the past 12 months, in regards to my family. Living without my children in Manchester has been incredibly challenging for me. Everything I do, I do for my daughters, Katie and Florencia. I need to be closer to them and to spend more time with them.”
Tevez’s daughters currently live with their mother, Tevez’s estranged partner Vanesa, in Buenos Aires.
“I need them to be happy because my life is about them now. I need to be in a place where they can adapt,” Tevez said. “Being captain of Manchester City, qualifying for the Champions League, winning the FA Cup and finishing as top scorer last season has made me very proud. I hope that most of the City fans will understand that I have given them my all on the pitch and that my dedication to the City cause has been 100 percent on the pitch. I have no doubt that the players and management of City will achieve great success in the future.”
It is understood Vanesa and the children struggled to settle in Manchester and returned to Argentina.
Tevez, in an interview with the Mail in Buenos Aires, said: “It is great being here, but it is going to be even more difficult to go back now.”
“It’s great now, enjoying spending time with my family, but it will be tough to go back. Being back here means I can cuddle my daughters. It’s a difficult situation when I’m not here,” he said.
City manager Roberto Mancini has repeatedly insisted that Tevez, who previously played for the club’s local rivals Manchester United, will stay at Eastlands.
The club’s FA Cup final win against Stoke City gave the club their first major piece of silverware in 35 years.
Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
Taiwanese judoka Yang Yung-wei on Saturday won silver in the men’s under-60kg category at the Asian Judo Championships in Hong Kong. Nicknamed the “judo heartthrob” in Taiwan, the Olympic silver-medalist missed out on his first Asian Championships gold when he lost to Japanese judoka Taiki Nakamura in the finals. Yang defeated three opponents on Saturday to reach the final after receiving a bye through the round of 32. He first topped Laotian Soukphaxay Sithisane in the round of 16 with two seoi nage (over-the-shoulder throws), then ousted Indian Vijay Kumar Yadav in the quarter-finals with his signature ude hishigi sankaku gatame (triangular armlock). Taiwanese gymnast Lee Chih-kai failed to secure an Olympic berth in the pommel horse following a second-place finish at the last qualifier in Doha on Friday, a performance that Lee and his coach called “unconvincing.” The Tokyo Olympics silver medalist finished runner-up in the final after scoring 6.6 for degree of difficulty and 8.800 for execution for a combined score of 15.400. That was just 0.100 short of Jordan’s Ahmad Abu Al Soud, who had qualified for the event in Paris before the Apparatus World Cup series in Qatar’s capital.
