Canada kept their hopes of reaching the quarter-finals of the Gold Cup alive, scraping a 1-0 win against 10-man Guadeloupe at the Raymond James Stadium on Saturday.
Guadeloupe were forced to play almost the entire match a man down after Jean-Luc Lambourde was sent off after he was shown a straight red card for a wild challenge on Canada midfielder Will Johnson in the third minute.
Canada striker Ali Gerba had an effort disallowed for offside, but despite the numerical disadvantage, Guadeloupe competed well and went close in the 29th minute when the lively Brice Jovial went on a winding run and set up Therry Racon, whose shot was well saved by Canada goalkeeper Milan Borjan.

The sides were scoreless at the break, but Guadeloupe’s intent was felt within a minute of the restart when Racon forced Borjan into action again with a sweetly struck effort from the edge of the area.
Canada finally got their breakthrough in the 51st minute when Stephane Zubar was judged, perhaps harshly, to have pulled down Gerba in the area and Dwayne De Rosario converted from the spot.
Simeon Jackson went close to a second with a superb effort from 30m which Franck Grandel did well to push wide.
There were some ugly scenes at the end of an occasionally bad-tempered game, with players confronting each other at the final whistle.
The three points were vital for Canada after their opening game defeat to the US and coach Stephen Hart said his team had been rewarded for their patience and he praised Guadeloupe’s resilience.
“They remained very, very organized for a team down to 10 men, they proved themselves hard to break down and the longer the game went on, they were still in the game. We didn’t take our chances, but then we got the penalty,” he said. “We didn’t want to change what we had set out to do — we just had to be patient, it was very, very hot, we wanted to make them run, keep the ball moving and let them do the bulk of the work — wait for a goal and see what happens.”
Guadeloupe head coach Roger Salnot said the red card had changed the game for his team.
“It was always going to be difficult when we were down to 10 men so early and obviously that made us change our strategy for the game,” Salnot said.
Canada face Panama in their final game, while Guadeloupe, bottom of Group C with two defeats, are up against the US.
Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
Taiwanese judoka Yang Yung-wei on Saturday won silver in the men’s under-60kg category at the Asian Judo Championships in Hong Kong. Nicknamed the “judo heartthrob” in Taiwan, the Olympic silver-medalist missed out on his first Asian Championships gold when he lost to Japanese judoka Taiki Nakamura in the finals. Yang defeated three opponents on Saturday to reach the final after receiving a bye through the round of 32. He first topped Laotian Soukphaxay Sithisane in the round of 16 with two seoi nage (over-the-shoulder throws), then ousted Indian Vijay Kumar Yadav in the quarter-finals with his signature ude hishigi sankaku gatame (triangular armlock). Taiwanese gymnast Lee Chih-kai failed to secure an Olympic berth in the pommel horse following a second-place finish at the last qualifier in Doha on Friday, a performance that Lee and his coach called “unconvincing.” The Tokyo Olympics silver medalist finished runner-up in the final after scoring 6.6 for degree of difficulty and 8.800 for execution for a combined score of 15.400. That was just 0.100 short of Jordan’s Ahmad Abu Al Soud, who had qualified for the event in Paris before the Apparatus World Cup series in Qatar’s capital. After missing the final rounds in the first two of four qualifier
