Jacoby Ellsbury led off the game with a home run and Adrian Gonzalez hit an RBI triple as the Red Sox roughed up Freddy Garcia (4-5) early to move within 2 percentage points of the first-place Yankees in the AL East.
Working on seven days’ rest, Boston starter Jon Lester (8-2) gave up three runs in six innings.
TIGERS 8, RANGERS 1
In Arlington, Texas, Austin Jackson had three of Detroit’s season-high 20 hits as Detroit powered past Texas.
A night after getting 18 hits, Detroit bats were alight again. Jackson helped the Tigers win a fourth straight with three RBIs. Detroit scored four runs in the fourth off Matt Harrison (5-5). Every Tiger in the lineup had at least one hit, including Casper Wells, Alex Avila, and Victor Martinez, who had three hits apiece.
Detroit starter Rick Porcello (6-3) won for the sixth time in his past seven outings, giving up just one run over six innings against the AL West-leading Rangers.
RAYS 4, ANGELS 1
In Anaheim, California, rookie Alex Cobb pitched 6-1/3 strong innings to earn his first major league victory and steer Tampa Bay past Los Angeles.
Cobb (1-0) allowed one run in his third major league start and first on the road.

Dan Haren (5-4) gave up eight hits in seven innings for the Angels, who have lost four straight.
WHITE SOX 5, MARINERS 1

INDIANS 1, TWINS 0
In Cleveland, Ohio, Carlos Carrasco took a shutout into the ninth inning as Cleveland snuffed out Minnesota’s streak of five straight wins.

AP, PHILADELPHIA
Rubby De La Rosa pitched five effective innings in his first career start to steer the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 6-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League on Tuesday.
De La Rosa (2-0) allowed one run, but constantly had to pitch out of trouble because he walked five and gave up four hits.
Dee Gordon had three hits in his first start while Matt Kemp hit a two-run homer for the Dodgers.
Phillies starter Roy Oswalt (3-4) lost his fourth straight decision. He allowed four runs in six innings to remain winless since April 21.
BRAVES 1, MARLINS 0
In Miami, Florida, the Atlanta Braves got only two hits, but that was enough to edge the Marlins.
Florida’s Brad Hand (0-1) went six innings in his major league debut and allowed just one hit — a homer by Alex Gonzalez leading off the fourth.
That was too much for the Marlins, who stranded 10 and went 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position. In the first five games of their homestand, they’ve left 49 men on base while batting .152 with runners in scoring position.
Atlanta starter Tommy Hanson (7-4) pitched six scoreless innings. He has shut out Florida in 13 innings over two starts this season.
Craig Kimbrel followed with a hitless ninth for his 18th save in 22 chances.
METS 2, BREWERS 1
In Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Jose Reyes hit a two-run triple to give New York the lead in the seventh inning and the Mets held on to beat Milwaukee.
Reyes’ triple came off reliever Marco Estrada (1-3) and wasted an impressive start from Milwaukee’s Shaun Marcum, who pitched six scoreless innings.
Prince Fielder hit his 15th home run of the season to give the Brewers the lead in the sixth, but that was the only big mistake of the night for Mets starter Chris Capuano (4-6), a long-time Brewers player making his return to Milwaukee.
Francisco Rodriguez pitched the ninth for his 17th save.

Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
Taiwanese judoka Yang Yung-wei on Saturday won silver in the men’s under-60kg category at the Asian Judo Championships in Hong Kong. Yang defeated three opponents on Saturday to reach the final after receiving a bye through the round of 32. He first topped Laotian Soukphaxay Sithisane in the round of 16 with two seoi nage (over-the-shoulder throws), then ousted Indian Vijay Kumar Yadav in the quarter-finals with his signature ude hishigi sankaku gatame (triangular armlock). Taiwanese gymnast Lee Chih-kai failed to secure an Olympic berth in the pommel horse following a second-place finish at the last qualifier in Doha on Friday, a performance that Lee and his coach called “unconvincing.” The Tokyo Olympics silver medalist finished runner-up in the final after scoring 6.6 for degree of difficulty and 8.800 for execution for a combined score of 15.400. That was just 0.100 short of Jordan’s Ahmad Abu Al Soud, who had qualified for the event in Paris before the Apparatus World Cup series in Qatar’s capital.
