In San Francisco, Freddy Sanchez singled home the winning run in the ninth inning to give the Giants a victory over Colorado on a night when San Francisco celebrated Willie Mays’ 80th birthday.
Sanchez’s line drive up the middle against Felipe Paulino (0-2) sent the Giants pouring out of the dugout and delighted a roaring crowd that came to toast Mays on a chilly, breezy night alongside San Francisco Bay.
Cody Ross led off the ninth with a double down the right-field line. Paulino struck out Aaron Rowand before Sanchez capped San Francisco’s comeback from a 3-0 deficit.
Brian Wilson (1-1) pitched the ninth for the win.

In New York, Andre Ethier extended his hitting streak to 30 games, but Jason Pridie’s three-run homer in the sixth inning carried the Mets past Los Angeles in the opener of a weekend series between baseball’s most financially troubled teams.
With the Mets trailing 3-2 on Friday, Pridie homered off a bullpen roof in right-center against Hiroki Kuroda (3-3) following an intentional walk to Ike Davis.
Jose Reyes tripled twice in a game for the second time this season and then doubled in the ninth. Davis homered for the Mets, who won for the third time in eight games following a six-game winning streak.
Ryota Igarashi (2-0) got one out to win in relief of Jonathon Niese, and Taylor Buchholz, Jason Isringhausen and Francisco Rodriguez each followed with an inning of shutout relief. A day after throwing 42 pitches, Rodriguez got his eighth save in nine chances.

Curtis Granderson hit two homers, rookie Ivan Nova limited the Texas Rangers to two singles up to the eighth inning, and the New York Yankees ended their season-worst three-game losing streak with a 4-1 victory on Friday night.
Even before Nova (3-2) threw his first pitch, Granderson put the Yankees ahead to stay.
His 433-foot drive into the second level of seats high above the Rangers’ bullpen in right-center made it 2-0 in the first. He hit his AL-leading 10th homer in the seventh, a towering solo shot closer to the right-field line, but still in the upper deck.
Nova struck out one, walked one and gave up an unearned run.

In Kansas City, Gio Gonzalez pitched seven effective innings as the Oakland Athletics ruined Eric Hosmer’s much-anticipated major league debut.
Gonzalez (4-2) settled down after allowing Alex Gordon’s homer in the first, holding Kansas City to two runs and four hits.
Hosmer made his first start at first base for Kansas City after hitting .439 at Triple-A Omaha, the highest average of any minor league regular. He went 0 for 2 with two walks.
Sean O’Sullivan (1-2) was almost as good as Gonzalez, but Oakland got to him for three runs in the fifth. The right-hander still managed a career-high eight innings, allowing five hits and one walk.

Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
Taiwanese judoka Yang Yung-wei on Saturday won silver in the men’s under-60kg category at the Asian Judo Championships in Hong Kong. Nicknamed the “judo heartthrob” in Taiwan, the Olympic silver-medalist missed out on his first Asian Championships gold when he lost to Japanese judoka Taiki Nakamura in the finals. Yang defeated three opponents on Saturday to reach the final after receiving a bye through the round of 32. He first topped Laotian Soukphaxay Sithisane in the round of 16 with two seoi nage (over-the-shoulder throws), then ousted Indian Vijay Kumar Yadav in the quarter-finals with his signature ude hishigi sankaku gatame (triangular armlock). Taiwanese gymnast Lee Chih-kai failed to secure an Olympic berth in the pommel horse following a second-place finish at the last qualifier in Doha on Friday, a performance that Lee and his coach called “unconvincing.” The Tokyo Olympics silver medalist finished runner-up in the final after scoring 6.6 for degree of difficulty and 8.800 for execution for a combined score of 15.400. That was just 0.100 short of Jordan’s Ahmad Abu Al Soud, who had qualified for the event in Paris before the Apparatus World Cup series in Qatar’s capital.
