France put their World Cup fiasco behind them as late goals by substitutes Loic Remy and Yoann Gourcuff earned them a 2-0 home win against Romania and top spot in Euro 2012 qualifying Group D on Saturday.
Les Bleus, who made an embarrassing first-round exit in South Africa, saw their campaign gather pace at a packed Stade de France after leaving it late to see off a tough Romania side.
Striker Remy, a 68th-minute replacement for Mathieu Valbuena, fired a low shot into the far corner of the net after a quick counter-attack seven minutes from time.

Playmaker Gourcuff, featuring for the first time since Les Bleus’ farcical South African campaign, came off the bench to put the result beyond doubt in stoppage-time.
“There is a deep change, but it’s only the beginning,” said winger Florent Malouda, who had an on-and-off relationship with former national team coach Raymond Domenech. “We said after the Bosnia game [a 2-0 away win] that we were able to play well. It’s good for our confidence because only good results can give you confidence.”
Laurent Blanc’s side, who started the campaign with an embarrassing defeat at home to Belarus, now have six points from three matches ahead of Albania and the Belarus on five points.
Romania stay second from bottom with two points.
“It is very frustrating because we lost just when we started to control the play, but we have to acknowledge France were superior,” Romania coach Razvan Lucescu told a press conference.
France’s next qualifier is against Luxembourg in Metz tomorrow.
The home side got off to a good start in Paris, with Samir Nasri and Valbuena dictating the play in the midfield, but they lacked sharpness as Romania just sat back.
“The team did not give up, they always believed they could win. I liked this spirit,” Blanc told a press conference. “It was a tough match, we did not create really clear chances in the first half because Romania were well organized and proved solid. I told my players a game was not finished after 60 minutes and that it was not forbidden to win it in the final 10 minutes.”
The home side had their first clear chance in the 19th minute when, after a fine pass on the turn by Nasri, Florent Malouda fired just wide.
France had another great opportunity to open the scoring four minutes before the break when Karim Benzema’s fine curled shot from the edge of the area and shaved the far post, but the hosts were asleep early in the second half when a Bogdan Stancu cross was struck on the volley at the far post by George Florescu forced goalkeeper Hugo Lloris to punch clear.
It spurred Les Bleus back into action, but they were superbly denied several times by visiting goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon.
Valbuena unleashed a powerful shot from 18m that brought a superb one-handed save by Pantelimon, who forced the ball up onto the bar, before it was booted clear of danger.
Benzema then struck a shot from close range at the near post, but found the Romania goalkeeper in his way, just before Nasri sped down the left flank and into the penalty area, only to see his attempt saved by Pantilimon’s feet.
The game could have gone Romania’s way in the 70th minute when Cristian Sapunaru’s shot struck Lloris’ right post and the France goalkeeper gratefully dived on the rebound, but it was France who took the lead when Remy collected a long ball from Alou Diarra and sped past Cristian Chivu, before beating Pantilimon to trigger wild celebrations in the crowd.
Gourcuff, who replaced a fading Nasri 16 minutes from time, then netted from close range three minutes into stoppage-time to wrap up the win having been set up by substitute Dimitri Payet.

Two first-half goals by Niko Kran-jcar fired Croatia to a 2-1 win over Israel and put them top of Group F on Saturday.
Kranjcar scored from the penalty spot in the 36th minute and added his second four minutes before the break with an excellent low shot.
Etay Shechter pulled a goal back for the hosts nine minutes from time to set up a tense finale, but Croatia held firm despite late pressure.
Croatia have seven points from three games, with Georgia and Greece on five points. Israel have four, followed by Latvia (three) and Malta (none).
“I am happy and proud of my players ... we caught Israel on the break five or seven times and we almost scored a third goal to kill the game, but once Israel scored there was a dangerous time for us at the end,” Croatia coach Slavan Bilic said. “It was a very exciting game to watch, Israel had some early chances when we made some technical errors, but we took control later on and played our normal game, controlling mainly on the right side.”
Croatia had to contend with a new-look Israel side that included a number of young players and was missing captain and mainstay Yossi Benayoun, who was ruled out through injury.
Shechter tested Croatia goalkeeper Vedran Runje with an early strike, but the hosts had a let off when Ivan Rakatic struck the post with a powerful strike from 25m.
Croatia looked the more dangerous side as the teams began to settle down, but Israel recovered their composure and found a way through the visitors’ defense a number of times, although they could not find a way past Runje in goal.
Croatia, who mainly exploited space on their right with Ivica Olic making forays into the area, finally got the breakthrough when defender Dekel Keinan fouled Josip Simunic to concede a penalty, which Kranjcar blasted past Dudu Aouate.
He quickly struck again from close range when he latched on to a cross from the right by Luka Modric.
It was a second straight victory for Croatia over Israel in Tel Aviv where they rarely lose. In November 2006, the visitors enjoyed a 4-3 win in a Euro 2008 qualifier.
Asked why Israel lost again, Bilic said: “I think you [Israel] suit us in the way you play. Israel like to play football as much as we do and when they give us space, we are dangerous.”
Israel coach Luis Fernandez said Benayoun’s absence had been a big blow for his side, although he thought his players had played well.
“Benayoun is always important for us, but Croatia also missed players, but I am not upset, I liked the attitude. We started very well, we had some good early chances, but after they scored the penalty and we conceded another goal soon afterwards it was very difficult,” the Frenchman said.
Israel will miss another vital player away to Greece tomorrow after Tal Ben Haim was booked and will serve a one-match suspension.
Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
Taiwanese judoka Yang Yung-wei on Saturday won silver in the men’s under-60kg category at the Asian Judo Championships in Hong Kong. Nicknamed the “judo heartthrob” in Taiwan, the Olympic silver-medalist missed out on his first Asian Championships gold when he lost to Japanese judoka Taiki Nakamura in the finals. Yang defeated three opponents on Saturday to reach the final after receiving a bye through the round of 32. He first topped Laotian Soukphaxay Sithisane in the round of 16 with two seoi nage (over-the-shoulder throws), then ousted Indian Vijay Kumar Yadav in the quarter-finals with his signature ude hishigi sankaku gatame (triangular armlock). Taiwanese gymnast Lee Chih-kai failed to secure an Olympic berth in the pommel horse following a second-place finish at the last qualifier in Doha on Friday, a performance that Lee and his coach called “unconvincing.” The Tokyo Olympics silver medalist finished runner-up in the final after scoring 6.6 for degree of difficulty and 8.800 for execution for a combined score of 15.400. That was just 0.100 short of Jordan’s Ahmad Abu Al Soud, who had qualified for the event in Paris before the Apparatus World Cup series in Qatar’s capital.
