NEW YORK GIANTS
Manningham gets concussion
Giants wide receiver Mario Manningham sustained a concussion in a 29-10 loss to the Tennessee Titans, but did not alert the medical staff in New York until Sunday night. Manningham did not practice on Wednesday, and his status for Sunday night’s game against the Bears is uncertain. He was unavailable for comment on Wednesday. Manningham had medical tests on Monday and coach Tom Coughlin said he appeared to be fine. On Wednesday, Manningham performed balance and coordination tests, according to a team spokesman, but did not undergo the ImPACT test, a computerized evaluation of memory, brain processing and visual motor skills. “He’ll be tested again and we’ll see how that comes out,” Coughlin said on Wednesday. “We’re a little bit surprised that there’s an issue.” Coughlin did not know the severity of the concussion or when Manningham sustained it during the game. It was also unknown whether Manningham felt the effects of the concussion during the game or if the symptoms developed later. Manningham had six catches for 78 yards, which does not include a 43-yard reception in the third quarter that was nullified because of a penalty.
BALTIMORE RAVENS
Pryce released for Hamlin
Four-time Pro Bowl defensive end Trevor Pryce has been released by the Baltimore Ravens so they could re-sign safety Ken Hamlin, the team said in Baltimore, Maryland, on Wednesday. Pryce, 35, led the Ravens with 6.5 sacks and had 31 tackles last year, but has made only one tackle this season as a non-starter for the 2-1 Ravens. Hamlin had played two games for the Ravens this season before being released last week. Baltimore has the NFL’s top-rated defense, giving up 244.3 yards per game.
NEW ORLEANS SAINTS
Old kicker brought back
The New Orleans Saints have brought back long-time kicker John Carney after his successor, Garrett Hartley, missed a field goal that would have beaten the Atlanta Falcons last weekend. Carney, 46, was added to the roster of the 2-1 Saints, the team confirmed on Wednesday. He would be the oldest player to compete in an NFL game this season if he kicks on Sunday against the Carolina Panthers at the Superdome in New Orleans. The NFL champions also retained Hartley despite last weekend’s crucial 29-yard miss in overtime against the Falcons. Atlanta ultimately won the game, 27-24. Hartley had replaced Carney for the final five games of last year’s regular season and the Super Bowl run. Carney has spent 22 seasons in the NFL with Tampa Bay, the Los Angeles Rams, San Diego, New Orleans, Jacksonville, Kansas City, the New York Giants and New Orleans again last season.
ARIZONA CARDINALS
Receiving corps thinned
The already thin Arizona Cardinals receiving corps suffered another casualty when Steve Breaston underwent arthroscopic surgery to repair meniscus damage in his right knee in Phoenix, Arizona, on Tuesday, the team said. Breaston is expected to miss Sunday’s game against the San Diego Chargers and perhaps the following week’s game at home against the New Orleans Saints. He has 14 receptions for 183 yards and one touchdown in three games this season. With wide receiver Early Doucet sidelined for several more weeks after hernia surgery, the Cardinals are likely to use two undrafted rookies and third-round pick Andre Roberts behind top receiver Larry Fitzgerald this week.
Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
Taiwanese judoka Yang Yung-wei on Saturday won silver in the men’s under-60kg category at the Asian Judo Championships in Hong Kong. Nicknamed the “judo heartthrob” in Taiwan, the Olympic silver-medalist missed out on his first Asian Championships gold when he lost to Japanese judoka Taiki Nakamura in the finals. Yang defeated three opponents on Saturday to reach the final after receiving a bye through the round of 32. He first topped Laotian Soukphaxay Sithisane in the round of 16 with two seoi nage (over-the-shoulder throws), then ousted Indian Vijay Kumar Yadav in the quarter-finals with his signature ude hishigi sankaku gatame (triangular armlock). In the tiebreaker, Chan and Kudermetova took a 3-0 lead before their opponents clawed back two points, but
Taiwanese gymnast Lee Chih-kai failed to secure an Olympic berth in the pommel horse following a second-place finish at the last qualifier in Doha on Friday, a performance that Lee and his coach called “unconvincing.” The Tokyo Olympics silver medalist finished runner-up in the final after scoring 6.6 for degree of difficulty and 8.800 for execution for a combined score of 15.400. That was just 0.100 short of Jordan’s Ahmad Abu Al Soud, who had qualified for the event in Paris before the Apparatus World Cup series in Qatar’s capital. After missing the final rounds in the first two of four qualifier
