Liu Fu-hao’s two-run double broke a 1-all tie in the top of the eighth inning and the Uni-President Lions went on to defeat the Sinon Bulls 3-1 at Taipei County Baseball Stadium in Sinjhuang last night.
The win not only avenged an ugly loss to the Bulls for the defending champs the night before, but also nipped the Bulls’ four-game non-losing streak in the early going of the young season.
Sinon held a 1-0 lead through the sixth with a first-inning run off Lions starter Jerome Williams.
However, the Lions came back with the tying run in the top of the seventh when Cheng Nai-wen got a hold on an offering from Bulls starter Shoda Itsuki and slapped it to shallow left with men at the corners to chase the Japanese native off the mound.
Even though the Bulls would prevent the Lions from putting up more runs in the same inning with an outstanding relief effort by Shen Yu-jeh, the Lions got their man the next inning as an error by Bulls’ third baseman Wilton Veras on a would-be inning-ending groundout gave them an extra out in the eighth to set up what ended up being the game-winning hit by Liu.
Picking up the win was Lions reliever Lin Cheng-fong who entered in the seventh inning to relieve Williams with 1-2/3 innings of shutout ball while the loss went to his counterpart Shen, who gave up the game-winner in the eighth for his first loss of the season.
