Ghiggia leaves footprints
Alcides Ghiggia, whose goal for Uruguay stunned spectators at Maracana stadium in the 1950 World Cup final against Brazil, has been immortalized at the Rio de Janeiro stadium’s sidewalk of fame. The striker on Tuesday became the 100th person to leave his footprints there, joining players such as Franz Beckenbauer, Eusebio, Pele, Romario, Zagallo, Kaka and Dunga. The 83-year-old Ghiggia, only the sixth international honored on the walk, scored the winner in Uruguay’s come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Brazil in front of nearly 200,000 fans at Maracana. Brazil needed only a draw to win the title and most fans were certain of securing the World Cup until Ghiggia’s go-ahead goal late in the match gave Uruguay its second world title.

Preston sack manager Irvine
English Championship side Preston North End announced on Tuesday they had sacked Alan Irvine as their manager. Irvine leaves the northwest club just over six months after steering them into the second-tier playoffs, where the winners secure a place in the Premier League. Former Everton assistant manager Irvine had been much praised since arriving at Deepdale in November 2007 but, following last season’s top six finish, the club have struggled this term. Preston chairman Derek Shaw decided a change was needed after Monday’s 1-0 loss away to Sheffield United left North End with just one win in their last 10 league matches. Preston are 16th in the table — eight points away from both the playoffs and the relegation zone. Assistant manager Robert Kelly will be in temporary charge.

Giants sign DeRosa
The San Francisco Giants signed Mark DeRosa to a US$12 million, two-year contract on Tuesday, a day after the versatile veteran passed a physical exam. Castroneves becomes father
Three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves has a new title: Dad. Castroneves’ girlfriend, Adriana Henao, gave birth to the couple’s first child, Mikaella Castroneves, on Monday in Atlanta. The baby girl measured in at 48cm and 3.3kg. In a statement released by Penske Racing, Castroneves said his girlfriend and child were doing well and the baby already had him running around “like crazy.” The Brazilian became the first foreigner to win the Indy 500 three times in May. He was fourth overall in the IndyCar Series this year despite missing the season’s first race while fighting US tax evasion charges. Castroneves was acquitted of all but one charge in April, and that was later dropped.
Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
