Make-up games continued this week, with the Uni-President Lions edging past the Sinon Bulls 4-3 at the Taichung Municipal Baseball Stadium on Wednesday night.
It was a big win for the visiting Cats, not only because starter Kenny Rayborn managed to pitch out of several jams to allow just one run on nine hits over six frames in preparation for the upcoming Taiwan Series, but also because it gave skipper Lu Wen-sheng a chance to substitute his players more freely in the game without much risk of losing.
Starting catcher Kao Chih-kang got a chance to play in the leftfield for the second straight game, while Shih Jin-dien and Hsu Sheng-jeh were able to play at second and third base, respectively, to give Lu a different perspective on his lineup in the hunt for his third straight title.

Pan Wu-hsiung’s RBI double in the top of the first got the Lions on the board in a hurry as they led it 3-0 through the fourth by tacking on a pair of runs in the fourth.
Held scoreless after four innings despite ripping a half-dozen hits off Rayborn in the process, the Sinon offense finally managed to score in the fifth on the strength of an RBI groundout by Chang Jien-ming after they had loaded up the bases with two singles and a walk.
The Lions scored a run in the seventh to make it 4-1. This turned out to be crucial, as the Bulls struck back with a run in the bottom of the same inning that cut the lead to 4-2 before a pitch by Lions reliever Lin Cheng-fong sailed wide to score the runner from third in the eighth inning, making it 4-3.
But that was as close as the Bulls got as Lions closer Lin Yueh-ping tossed a scoreless ninth to preserve the fifth win of the year for Rayborn.
BEARS 4, ELEPHANTS 1
The La New Bears vented some of their frustration in missing the postseason after losing out after a heated pursuit by defeating the Brother Elephants at the Chiayi Municipal Baseball Stadium on Wednesday evening.
It was the second straight loss for the Elephants after they clinched the second-half title last Saturday to earn the right to take on the Lions in the Taiwan Series.
“This is not exactly the way we want to play heading into the postseason, so we’ll have to do everything better,” Elephants manager Nakagomi Sin said after the game.
His troops actually outhit the Bears 9-to-8, but had only a lone run on the board to show for it with dismal 1-for-5 hitting with men in scoring position.
Chou Si-chi’s solo blast off Bears reliever Hsu Chih-hua was the lone highlight for an Elephants squad that does not want to go into a slump with the postseason less than 10 days away.
Bayer 04 Leverkusen go into today’s match at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim stung from their first league defeat in 16 months. Leverkusen were beaten 3-2 at home by RB Leipzig before the international break, the first loss since May last year for the reigning league and cup champions. While any defeat, particularly against a likely title rival, would have disappointed coach Xabi Alonso, the way in which it happened would be most concerning. Just as they did in the Supercup against VfB Stuttgart and in the league opener to Borussia Moenchengladbach, Leverkusen scored first, but were pegged back. However, while Leverkusen rallied late to
The lights dimmed and the crowd hushed as Karoline Kristensen entered for her performance. However, this was no ordinary Dutch theater: The temperature was 80°C and the audience naked apart from a towel. Dressed in a swimsuit and to the tune of emotional music, the 21-year-old Kristensen started her routine, performed inside a large sauna, with a bed of hot rocks in the middle. For a week this month, a group of wellness practitioners, called “sauna masters,” are gathering at a picturesque health resort in the Netherlands to compete in this year’s Aufguss world sauna championships. The practice takes its name from a
Japanese players are moving to English soccer in record numbers and more look set to follow with clubs attracted by their quality, strong work ethic and value for money. Kaoru Mitoma is the standout talent of five Japanese players in the English Premier League, with eight more in the Championship and two in League One. Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo, the captain of Japan, believes his compatriots are “being held in higher esteem” by English clubs compared with the past. “The staff at Liverpool ask me about lots of Japanese players, not necessarily with a view to a transfer, but just saying this or
Taiwan yesterday survived Bosnia and Herzegovina to win their Davis Cup World Group I tie at the Taipei Tennis Center. The tight series started on Saturday with world No. 123 Jason Tseng losing 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 to Mirza Basic in the opening singles matchup. However, teammate Tony Wu kept the tie even, dominating world No. 86 Damir Dzumhur 6-2, 6-1. Yesterday, 24-year-old Ray Ho and partner 25-year-old Hsu Yu-hsiou kept up the momentum, making short work of Basic and Nerman Fatic, winning 6-3, 6-4. Tseng then suffered another defeat, losing 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 to Dzumhur in a brutal match that lasted more than two
