The Tampa Bay Rays survived a shaky eighth inning before beating the Boston Red Sox 8-5 on Wednesday and gaining some ground in the American League Wild Card race.
After allowing the Red Sox to tie the score at 5-5 in the top of the eighth, Pat Burrell’s RBI single put the Rays ahead and Evan Longoria hit a two-run blast at the bottom of the same inning to cap the win. It was Longoria’s 26th homer of the season.
Reliever J.P. Howell (7-4) was credited with the win while Dan Wheeler came on to record the final two outs of the game as the Rays (72-60) moved back within five games of the Red Sox.
“This is huge. We realize the importance of every game at this point, especially against teams ahead of us in the division,” Longoria told reporters. “We see [Boston’s] pitchers so much there’s a little bit of familiarity that gives you a little more confidence as a hitter.”
Tampa Bay led 5-1 after three innings, but the Red Sox scored twice in the fourth and got an RBI single from Victor Martinez in the seventh to pull within one.
Boston tied the game in the eighth — without recording a hit — as Rays relievers gave up two walks before Howell threw a wild pitch that allowed pinch-runner Joey Gathright to score the tying run.
Boston’s Josh Beckett (14-5) allowed five runs in six innings to go winless for the fourth straight outing. He surrendered home runs to Carl Crawford and Burrell.
Tampa Bay starter Matt Garza allowed four runs and was relieved in the seventh inning.
The Red Sox (77-55) claimed the opener of the three-game series 8-4 on Tuesday. The rubber was to be played yesterday.
“Everything’s big now,” Burrell said. “We have to go for it every time we step on the field; we have a lot of ground to make up.”

Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
Taiwanese judoka Yang Yung-wei on Saturday won silver in the men’s under-60kg category at the Asian Judo Championships in Hong Kong. Nicknamed the “judo heartthrob” in Taiwan, the Olympic silver-medalist missed out on his first Asian Championships gold when he lost to Japanese judoka Taiki Nakamura in the finals. Yang defeated three opponents on Saturday to reach the final after receiving a bye through the round of 32. He first topped Laotian Soukphaxay Sithisane in the round of 16 with two seoi nage (over-the-shoulder throws), then ousted Indian Vijay Kumar Yadav in the quarter-finals with his signature ude hishigi sankaku gatame (triangular armlock). Taiwanese gymnast Lee Chih-kai failed to secure an Olympic berth in the pommel horse following a second-place finish at the last qualifier in Doha on Friday, a performance that Lee and his coach called “unconvincing.” The Tokyo Olympics silver medalist finished runner-up in the final after scoring 6.6 for degree of difficulty and 8.800 for execution for a combined score of 15.400. That was just 0.100 short of Jordan’s Ahmad Abu Al Soud, who had qualified for the event in Paris before the Apparatus World Cup series in Qatar’s capital.
