Upton, who had four hits and scored three runs, leveled the score at 2-2 with a two-run double in the fifth inning. He then put Tampa Bay ahead to stay with a two-run homer in the seventh.
“It’s starting to come around, slowly but surely,” Upton, who tied a career high with his four RBIs, told reporters. “Just have to stick with it and keep doing what I’m doing.”
Tampa Bay claimed the series by winning their second consecutive game over the Mets.
“When B.J. gets going — leadoff hitter, whoever’s in the spot — when they get going early, it gives the guys a little more confidence,” said Tampa Bay’s Evan Longoria, who also had four hits.
The Rays, the defending American League champions, shelled seven Mets pitchers for 17 hits in a game delayed by rain for 34 minutes in the seventh inning.
Tampa Bay scored four runs to take the lead in the fifth inning and tallied four more in the seventh after the National League Mets had taken a 5-4 lead on Brian Schneider’s three-run homer in the sixth.
“After we gave up the homer to Schneider and put them back on top, our guys really responded well,” Rays manager Joe Maddon said. “And B.J.’s home run was magnificent.”
Maddon said he thought another big moment was Willy Aybar’s pinch-hit single in the fifth, when the Rays trailed 2-0.
“That turned the tide right around,” Maddon said of the hit, which loaded the bases. “That gave us a strong sense of believing right there and it put them in a totally different mindset.”
Upton followed with his two-run double to tie the score.
Carl Crawford added three hits for the Rays, while David Wright collected three of New York’s 10 hits.
CARDINALS 12, ROYALS 5
Albert Pujols finished off a three-day romp in Kansas City, Missouri, with two homers and six RBIs to help the St Louis Cardinals rout the Royals in win No. 2,500 for manager Tony La Russa.
Pujols made a mockery of Kansas City’s pitching in his return to the town where he went to high school, hitting three homers and driving in 10 runs in the Cardinals’ three-game sweep over their cross-state rivals.
The two-time National League MVP had four hits on Sunday and delivered the decisive blow in the Cardinals’ eight-run fourth inning, pounding his club record-tying third grand slam of the season. He also had a run-scoring single in the first and added his major league-leading 26th homer in the fifth to put the Cardinals up 12-4.
Pujols matched Stan Musial’s team record of nine career slams.
His fifth multihomer game this season helped La Russa join Connie Mack (3,831) and John McGraw (2,763) as the only managers with 2,500 victories.
Khalil Greene homered for the third straight game, but left in the fourth after being hit on the right knee by a pitch.
Jose Guillen homered for Kansas City, which has allowed 53 runs during a five-game losing streak.
MARLINS 6, YANKEES 5
At Miami, Hanley Ramirez and Cody Ross homered as Florida held off a late rally to beat the struggling New York Yankees after CC Sabathia left early with an injury.
The game was protested by New York manager Joe Girardi because of an eighth-inning mixup with the Marlins lineup.
Sabathia came out in the second with tightness in his left biceps and the Marlins took advantage, handing New York its fourth loss in five games — all against Washington and Florida. Sabathia is day to day.
Ramirez tied it with a two-run homer in the fifth, and Ross’ solo shot off Brett Tomko (0-2) in the sixth put the Marlins ahead for good.
Alex Rodriguez returned to the Yankees’ lineup after being benched the past two games, ending his 0-for-16 skid with a two-run single during his first start ever in his hometown of Miami.
ORIOLES 2, PHILLIES 1
At Philadelphia, Brian Roberts had the decisive hit for the second straight game, a tiebreaking single in the eighth inning as Baltimore completed a three-game sweep of Philadelphia.
Roberts hit an RBI single off Cole Hamels (4-3) that made it 2-1 and sent the Orioles to their fifth straight win, matching a season high.

Clint Barmes homered, drove in two runs and scored two more as surging Colorado completed a sweep of Pittsburgh with a 5-4 victory, their 16th in 17 games.
Since having their 11-game winning streak snapped, the Rockies have won five straight. They improved to 18-5 under manager Jim Tracy, who took over when Clint Hurdle was fired.
Freddy Sanchez homered and drove in three runs for the Pirates, who have lost four straight. Paul Maholm (4-4) allowed five runs in five innings.
DODGERS 5, ANGELS 3
At Anaheim, California, James Loney hit a two-run homer that was upheld by video review and Clayton Kershaw pitched seven shutout innings as the Los Angeles Dodgers took two of three in the Freeway Series against the Angels.
Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
Taiwanese judoka Yang Yung-wei on Saturday won silver in the men’s under-60kg category at the Asian Judo Championships in Hong Kong. Nicknamed the “judo heartthrob” in Taiwan, the Olympic silver-medalist missed out on his first Asian Championships gold when he lost to Japanese judoka Taiki Nakamura in the finals. Yang defeated three opponents on Saturday to reach the final after receiving a bye through the round of 32. He first topped Laotian Soukphaxay Sithisane in the round of 16 with two seoi nage (over-the-shoulder throws), then ousted Indian Vijay Kumar Yadav in the quarter-finals with his signature ude hishigi sankaku gatame (triangular armlock). Taiwanese gymnast Lee Chih-kai failed to secure an Olympic berth in the pommel horse following a second-place finish at the last qualifier in Doha on Friday, a performance that Lee and his coach called “unconvincing.” The Tokyo Olympics silver medalist finished runner-up in the final after scoring 6.6 for degree of difficulty and 8.800 for execution for a combined score of 15.400. That was just 0.100 short of Jordan’s Ahmad Abu Al Soud, who had qualified for the event in Paris before the Apparatus World Cup series in Qatar’s capital.
