Andy Roddick won his first title of the year and the 27th of his career on Sunday, beating Czech Radek Stepanek 7-5, 7-5 in the finals of the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships.
Only Roger Federer (57) and Rafael Nadal (32) have won more titles among active players. Roddick confirmed on Friday that he wouldn’t defend his title at Dubai. He said he wasn’t happy about the denial of a visa to Israeli player Shahar Peer by the United Arab Emirates for the women’s event this week.
But Roddick read a report that a hernia was his reason for withdrawing.

“There’s no other reason. Obviously, I don’t have a hernia. I probably wouldn’t have played too well today. I would ask you guys to check but that might be inappropriate. I’m 100 percent healthy,” Roddick said.
Roddick got a bit of revenge for losing to Stepanek in the semi-finals in San Jose last week.
The American survived a tight match on Sunday by breaking Stepanek in the 12th game of each set to extend his streak of years with at least one title to nine.

Stepanek had won nine consecutive matches but struggled with unforced errors.
“Obviously, he’s been playing his best tennis of his career probably this year and especially the past couple weeks. I knew what it was going to take, and I was able to get there,” Roddick said.
The world’s sixth-ranked player improved to 17 wins against three losses in match play this year. Of his 27 titles, 19 have come in North America, and this was Roddick’s second at Memphis.
“We have a long year ahead of us,” Roddick said. “We always do, but this is the best start I’ve had in a long time. Possibly ever, actually, if you just look at the first two months of the year.”
Roddick broke Stepanek in the second game to go up 2-0. The Czech trailed 3-1 when he broke Roddick and then held serve to even the first set at 3-3.
They appeared headed toward a tiebreaker when Stepanek trailed 30-40 and hit a forehand long to give Roddick the first set.
Tied at 4-4 in the second set, Stepanek had a chance to break Roddick at 15-40. The American fought back to force deuce, served up an ace, before Stepanek hit a forehand wide after a long rally.
Stepanek was entertaining, at one point using his head to knock a ball back to a ball girl and then hitting a ball over to a ball boy through his legs. After the match, Stepanek noticed he had been given the winner’s trophy and presented it to Roddick.
When needing to hold serve to force a second-set tiebreaker, Stepanek won only one point off a forehand Roddick hit long up 0-40.
Roddick then closed out the title with a forehand passing shot.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the French fourth seed, won the Open 13 ATP tournament on Sunday, defeating compatriot Michael Llodra 7-5, 7-6 (7/3) for his fourth career title, which he dedicated to his sick father.
World No. 12 Tsonga added the win a fortnight after his success in the South African Open, living up to his pre-match status as favorite on the heels of his fine win over top-seeded world No. 3 Novak Djokovic in the semis.
He finished Llodra off with his 11th ace before explaining his thoughts were with his father, former handballer Didier, who had surgery during the week.
“I almost didn’t come here. I couldn’t tell you that my father was operated on this week. Today, I dedicate this win to him,” Tsonga said.
Alluding back to his fourth straight win over Djokovic, he added: “With this tournament I showed I was capable of beating one of the world’s top players once again and that I was ready to make the step up to join the big guys.”
But Tsonga had to labor for the victory as world No. 50 Llodra, primarily known for his doubles skills, gave him a run for his money despite dropping serve at the outset.
Llodra broke back in the fourth game with some fine returns as he acrobatically rushed the net before getting his nose in front at 5-4 and Tsonga had to raise his game a notch before sneaking the crucial break in the 11th game with some barreling returns before taking the opening set.
The second set went with serve and it was Tsonga again who raised the bar in the tiebreaker, winning it 7-3 to take the match on his first match point as he pocketed his fourth title, Llodra not helping his own cause as he double faulted before lamentably missing a smash to give his rival three match points.
Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
Taiwanese judoka Yang Yung-wei on Saturday won silver in the men’s under-60kg category at the Asian Judo Championships in Hong Kong. Nicknamed the “judo heartthrob” in Taiwan, the Olympic silver-medalist missed out on his first Asian Championships gold when he lost to Japanese judoka Taiki Nakamura in the finals. Yang defeated three opponents on Saturday to reach the final after receiving a bye through the round of 32. He first topped Laotian Soukphaxay Sithisane in the round of 16 with two seoi nage (over-the-shoulder throws), then ousted Indian Vijay Kumar Yadav in the quarter-finals with his signature ude hishigi sankaku gatame (triangular armlock). RALLY: It was only the second time the Taiwanese has partnered with Kudermetova, and the match seemed tight until they won seven points in a row to take the last set 10-2 Taiwan’s Chan Hao-ching and Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova on Sunday won the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix women’s doubles final in Stuttgart, Germany. The pair defeated Norway’s Ulrikke Eikeri and Estonia’s Ingrid Neel 4-6, 6-3, 10-2 in a tightly contested match at the WTA 500 tournament. Chan and Kudermetova fell 4-6 in the first set after having their serve broken three times, although they played increasingly well. They fought back in the second set and managed to break their opponents’ serve in the eighth game to triumph 6-3. In the tiebreaker, Chan and Kudermetova took a 3-0 lead before their opponents clawed back two points, but
Taiwanese gymnast Lee Chih-kai failed to secure an Olympic berth in the pommel horse following a second-place finish at the last qualifier in Doha on Friday, a performance that Lee and his coach called “unconvincing.” The Tokyo Olympics silver medalist finished runner-up in the final after scoring 6.6 for degree of difficulty and 8.800 for execution for a combined score of 15.400. That was just 0.100 short of Jordan’s Ahmad Abu Al Soud, who had qualified for the event in Paris before the Apparatus World Cup series in Qatar’s capital. After missing the final rounds in the first two of four qualifier
