On Friday, the fifth day of the US Open, first-seeded mixed doubles pair Chuang Chia-jung (莊佳容) of Taiwan and Canada’s Daniel Nestor lost their first round match against unseeded Americans Sloane Stephens and Robert Kendrick in straight sets, 1-6, 4-6. The evening match was interrupted by rain and could only resume at 9pm.
Chuang had problems both holding and receiving serve and didn’t perform well at the net and the match was over in 45 minutes. After the match, Chuang was dissatisfied with her performance and said that maybe she was too tired, but added that their opponents played very well.
The defeat means that all Taiwanese players now are out of this year’s US Open. Lu Yen-hsun (盧彥勳), Chan Yung-jan (詹詠然) and Hsieh Su-wei (謝淑薇) managed to win their first round singles matches, but all three followed up by crashing out in the second round. Chuang and Chan lost their first round women’s doubles match, as did Lu and Jim Thomas of the US in the men’s doubles and Chan and Austrian Julian Knowle in the mixed doubles.
