Taiwan will compete in the Beijing Olympic Games’ cycling race after receiving a wild-card invitation from the International Cycling Union (UCI), sports sources said on Tuesday.
The invitation follows the UCI’s recognition of the outstanding performance of Taiwanese cyclist Feng Chun-kai, who won a gold medal in last year’s Asian Cycling Championship, said an official of the Chinese Taipei Cycling Association, which is a member of the UCI.
Feng’s participation in the Beijing cycling event will bring the number of Olympic events in which Taiwan will compete to a record high of 15, said Hung Chi-chang, director of the National Sports Training Center in Kaohsiung.
Taiwan’s Olympic team this year will consist of 80 athletes, Hung said.
