The La New Bears picked up two easy wins at home on Sunday by sweeping the day-night doubleheader against the dmedia T-Rex in a 9-0 shutout in the afternoon and a 6-3 final at night.
The showdown between the two former TML clubs at the Kaohsiung County Baseball Stadium was all-Bears from the get go with the home hosts striking for four first-inning runs off T-Rex starter Lai Jung-nan on three clutch base hits, all with two outs.
That was more than ample for Bears Hsu Yu-wei as he took a 9-0 shutout through the eighth before yielding to closer Huang Jung-chung in a scoreless ninth to keep the shutout intact.
Offensively for the Bears, five different players had multi-hit games on the day, led by Pan Chung-wei’s 2-for-4 outing with three RBIs while Chen Chin-fong went deep with his team-best tenth homer of the season, a solo blast off Lai in the bottom of the third.
Lin Chih-sheng’s two-run blast was the difference in the night game of the doubleheader as it broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the third to put the Bears ahead 5-3.
Lefty Andrew Loraine won his fifth game of the year with seven strong innings of three-run ball on five hits. All three of the runs he allowed were unearned, triggered by throwing error by Shih Chih-wei in the top of the second.
In addition to Lin’s three-hit, three-RBI effort, Chen also collected three more RBIs on the night to overtake the top spot in the league for most RBIs with 50 for the season.
Suffering the loss for the T-Rex was American righty Cory Bailey who allowed five runs on seven hits over six frames against his former team to drop to 5-2 for the year.
Bulls 3, Whales 1
The Sinon Bulls continued their dominance over the Chinatrust Whales by taking the second game of the series in a 3-1 final at the Taichung Municipal Baseball Stadium on Sunday to complete their two-game sweep of the marine creatures.
Rookie righty Shen Fu-ren showed tremendous maturity off the mound with a two-hit gem over 5-2/3 innings of shutout ball despite walking a season-high of five to earn his fourth win of the year.
The opportunistic Bulls offense took advantage of a shaky start by the Whales Nee Fu-deh with a first-inning run and struck for two more in the sixth to lead it 3-0 through the eighth.
The Whales finally scored in the top of the ninth to avoid what would have been embarrassing back-to-back shutout losses to the Bulls as they had dropped the series-opener the night before in a 3-0 decision.
