Richard Hamilton scored 31 points as the Detroit Pistons advanced to the National Basketball Association semi-finals for the sixth year in a row by defeating Orlando 91-86 on Tuesday.
The Pistons captured the best-of-seven Eastern Conference second-round series 4-1 and will next play either the Boston Celtics or Cleveland Cavaliers for a berth in next month’s NBA Finals.
During the latest run of trips to the NBA’s final four, the Pistons won a title in 2004 and lost the 2005 final to San Antonio in seven games, but lost in the East final in 2003 and the past two years.
Detroit improved to 15-3 in potential series-clinching games and became the first team to reach six conference finals in a row since the Los Angeles Lakers did it in the West from 1984 through 1989.
The Celtics, the NBA regular-season champions, lead Cleveland 2-1 in their series and are the only NBA team that would have a playoff home-court edge on the Pistons, who were ousted by the Cavaliers last year in the semi-finals.
Antonio McDyess scored 17 points, 11 of them in the fourth quarter, and grabbed 11 rebounds to spark the Pistons despite playing with a heavy heart after learning just before the game that his grandmother had died.
“It made me think she was looking down upon us and I’ll definitely dedicate this win to her because she never missed a game,” McDyess said. “She always called me, always talking about the game. She loved the Pistons. I’m just happy to have the opportunity to win this game on such an important day of her passing — brings tears to my eyes, pretty much. I tried not to think about it when I was on the court. She was definitely with me.”
The Pistons also had 15 points from Rodney Stuckey and 14 points from Rasheed Wallace.
Detroit scored 13 points in a row to seize a 78-70 edge and McDyess hit three free throws in a row to give the Pistons an 82-72 lead, their largest of the game.
Hedo Turkoglu, who led Orlando with 18 points, hit a jumper and assisted on a Rashard Lewis three-pointer to cut Detroit’s lead in half with 3 minutes, 8 seconds remaining and the margin was the same, 89-85, after Tayshaun Prince hit a free throw with 79 seconds left.
Turkoglu answered with back-to-back baskets to pull Orlando within a point, but the Turkish standout knocked a rebound out of bounds with 20.9 seconds remaining and Orlando began fouling to stop the clock.
Hamilton, who was perfect on 16 free throws, hit six in the final 19.6 seconds to keep the Magic at bay, while Prince blocked a Turkoglu dunk attempt and Orlando lost the ball out of bounds on the next possession, the 21st and last Magic turnover of the game. Those giveaways set up 34 Pistons points.
The Pistons played without point guard Chauncey Billups, who is suffering from a strained right hamstring suffered in a Game 3 road loss last week.
Dwight Howard had 14 points and 17 rebounds for Orlando, who failed to back up Jameer Nelson’s guarantee of a victory. Nelson also had 14 points.
Hornets 101, Spurs 79
David West battled through a pinched back nerve for the game of his life and as a result, defending National Basketball Association champions San Antonio are on the brink of a playoff exit.
The 27-year-old power forward scored 38 points to spark New Orleans past San Antonio on Tuesday, giving the Hornets a 3-2 edge over the Spurs in the best-of-seven Western Conference second-round series.
West’s points total, off 16-of-25 shooting, was a career playoff high, as were his 14 rebounds and five blocked shots. After a disappointing effort in a Game 4 defeat, West bounced back with a vengeance.
The Hornets can advance to the NBA semi-finals with a victory today in San Antonio, where the Spurs will try to continue the home-team domination in the series and force a seventh game back in New Orleans on Monday.
West finished one point shy of Glen Rice’s 1997 club record for points in a playoff game.
Chris Paul added 22 points, 16 in the second half, and grabbed 14 rebounds, while Peja Stojakovic contributed 11 rebounds and nine points for the Hornets.
Argentina’s Manu Ginobili led the Spurs with 20 points. France’s Tony Parker had 18 points on five-of-15 shooting, while Tim Duncan grabbed a season-high 23 rebounds for the Spurs, but only had 10 points on five-of-18 shooting.
San Antonio led 47-44 at halftime, but just as in their two prior home triumphs, the Hornets used a third-quarter spree to seize command. New Orleans have outscored the Spurs 93-46 in third periods at home in the series.
New Orleans began the third quarter with a 20-4 run, seizing a 64-51 lead as the Spurs went one-of-10 from the field. The Hornets had a 28-11 scoring edge in the period on the way to an 18th triumph in their past 19 home games.
Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
Taiwanese judoka Yang Yung-wei on Saturday won silver in the men’s under-60kg category at the Asian Judo Championships in Hong Kong. Nicknamed the “judo heartthrob” in Taiwan, the Olympic silver-medalist missed out on his first Asian Championships gold when he lost to Japanese judoka Taiki Nakamura in the finals. Yang defeated three opponents on Saturday to reach the final after receiving a bye through the round of 32. He first topped Laotian Soukphaxay Sithisane in the round of 16 with two seoi nage (over-the-shoulder throws), then ousted Indian Vijay Kumar Yadav in the quarter-finals with his signature ude hishigi sankaku gatame (triangular armlock). RALLY: It was only the second time the Taiwanese has partnered with Kudermetova, and the match seemed tight until they won seven points in a row to take the last set 10-2 Taiwan’s Chan Hao-ching and Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova on Sunday won the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix women’s doubles final in Stuttgart, Germany. The pair defeated Norway’s Ulrikke Eikeri and Estonia’s Ingrid Neel 4-6, 6-3, 10-2 in a tightly contested match at the WTA 500 tournament. Chan and Kudermetova fell 4-6 in the first set after having their serve broken three times, although they played increasingly well. They fought back in the second set and managed to break their opponents’ serve in the eighth game to triumph 6-3. In the tiebreaker, Chan and Kudermetova took a 3-0 lead before their opponents clawed back two points, but
Taiwanese gymnast Lee Chih-kai failed to secure an Olympic berth in the pommel horse following a second-place finish at the last qualifier in Doha on Friday, a performance that Lee and his coach called “unconvincing.” The Tokyo Olympics silver medalist finished runner-up in the final after scoring 6.6 for degree of difficulty and 8.800 for execution for a combined score of 15.400. That was just 0.100 short of Jordan’s Ahmad Abu Al Soud, who had qualified for the event in Paris before the Apparatus World Cup series in Qatar’s capital. After missing the final rounds in the first two of four qualifier
