Tseng Hua-wei’s two-run single capped a three-run eighth that broke a 5-5 tie as the Sinon Bulls beat the Brother Elephants 8-5 in Taichung on a wet Thursday night.
With the score deadlocked at five-all in the bottom of the eighth and runners at the corners with two outs, the Bulls took the lead as a result of a wild pitch by Elephants reliever Todd Moser.
They then had another hitter reach base as a result of an error, setting the stage for Tseng’s late-game heroics.
“In this game, you’d better make the most of every opportunity thrown at you,” Tseng said after being voted the game-MVP.
He ended up with four RBIs on a 3-for-5 night.
seesaw battle
The seesaw battle between the two clubs that featured four lead-changes saw the home Bulls striking first in the bottom of the first when Chang Jien-ming scored from third on a poor throw to the plate by the Elephants shortstop Wang Sheng-wei.
Chang “Prince of the Forest” Tai-shan followed up with an RBI-single to give the Bulls a 2-0 lead.
Wu Bo-hong’s run-scoring double off Elephants starter Steve Kent in the bottom of the second promptly made it 3-0 in favor of the Bulls.
The Brother Elephants then responded with a three-run third to even things up at 3-3.
The Elephants batted around the order in the inning to produce three runs on the strength of two singles, a double, and three walks.
Sinon claimed its second lead of the game an inning later when Tseng came through with a two-run single that put his team ahead 5-3 in the fourth.
golden boys
The men in the golden uniform fought back with a run in the fifth on Peng “Chia Chia” Cheng-min’s run-scoring single before Chen Guan-ren tied the game up in the seventh with a clutch liner up the middle to level the game up at 5-5.
Picking up his first win of the season with one-and-two-third innings of hitless relief was Sinon rookie Tsai Ming-jin.
He entered in the seventh and pitched his team out of a bases-loaded-with-one-out jam before retiring the side in order in a perfect eighth.
Suffering the painful loss on behalf of the Elephants by allowing two of the Bulls’ eighth-inning runs (both of them unearned) was Lin Chi-wei, who suffered his first setback of the season.
Brazil has four teams, more than any other country, in the expanded Club World Cup that kicked off yesterday in the US, but for SE Palmeiras, the competition holds a special meaning: winning it would provide some redemption. Under coach Abel Ferreira since 2020, Palmeiras lifted two Copa Libertadores titles, plus Brazilian league, cup and state championships. Even before Ferreira, it boasted another South American crown and 11 league titles. The only major trophy missing is a world champions’ title. Other Brazilian clubs like Fluminense FC and Botafogo FR, also in the tournament, have never won it either, but the problem for Palmeiras
Lionel Messi drew vast crowds and showed flashes of his brilliance when his Inter Miami side were held to a goalless draw by African giants Al-Ahly as the revamped FIFA Club World Cup got off to a festive start on Saturday. Fans showed up en masse for the Group A clash at the Hard Rock Stadium, home to the NFL’s Miami Dolphins, but Messi could not fully deliver, his best chance coming through a last-second attempt that was deflected onto the crossbar. Inter Miami next face FC Porto on Thursday in Atlanta, while Al-Ahly, who benefited from raucous, massive support, are to
Sergio Ramos on Tuesday outfoxed two Inter players and artfully headed home the first goal for Monterrey at the FIFA Club World Cup. The 39-year-old Ramos slipped through the penalty area for the score just as he did for so many years in the shirts of Real Madrid and Spain’s national team, with whom he combined smarts, timing and physicality. Ramos’ clever goal and his overall defensive play at the Rose Bowl were major factors in Monterrey’s impressive 1-1 draw against the UEFA Champions League finalists in the clubs’ first match of the tournament. “There is always a joy to contribute to the
Los Angeles Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani on Monday wobbled through a 28-pitch first inning at home against the San Diego Padres in his first appearance on the mound since August 2023. Scheduled to throw as many as two innings, Ohtani went a single frame while allowing one run on two hits. He did not issue a walk nor strike out a batter. “Not quite happy with the results overall, but the takeaway for me is that I feel good enough to be able to make the next outing,” Ohtani said of his pitching performance. Ohtani still wound up with a positive impact
