Mike Modano scored two goals in the first 4:24 to surpass Phil Housley's career record for points by a US-born player, and the Dallas Stars beat the San Jose Sharks 3-1 on Wednesday night.
Modano, the 37-year-old Michigan native who has been the star of Stars for nearly two decades in Minnesota and Dallas, tied the mark with a long slap shot past Evgeni Nabokov just 2:19 in. The speedy center added a short-handed goal moments later, earning grudging applause from the Shark Tank crowd for the longtime foe's latest remarkable feat.
Steve Ott also scored for the Stars, who were outshot 39-12 -- but Marty Turco made 38 saves in Dallas' fourth straight victory in San Jose.
FLYERS 3, PENGUINS 1
At Pittsburgh, Joffrey Lupul and Jeff Carter scored on two of Philadelphia's first three shots and the Flyers beat the Penguins for the first time in two seasons.
The Flyers went 0-8 against the Penguins last season, the first time in club history they lost that many games in a season to a single opponent. They hadn't won in Pittsburgh in five games since January last year.
Mike Richards also scored for the Flyers, who scored twice in about 5.5 minutes against Penguins backup goaltender Dany Sabourin.
The Penguins, who scored five goals or more five times against the Flyers last season, got back into the game when Ryan Malone scored in the final minute of the period.
Flyers goalie Martin Biron made 26 saves.
SABRES 2, BRUINS 1, OT
At Buffalo, New York, Clarke MacArthur scored 3:16 into overtime, and Ryan Miller made 25 saves to give Buffalo the win.
Cruising in the high slot, MacArthur one-timed Drew Stafford's pass from the left boards past goalie Tim Thomas for the win.
Ales Kotalik also scored for Buffalo, which snapped a three-game losing streak.
Marc Savard scored for Boston, which lost for the third straight time. Boston has lost eight of its last nine in Buffalo.
LIGHTNING 3, PANTHERS 1
At Tampa, Florida, Martin St. Louis and Jan Hlavac scored first-period goals and Johan Holmqvist stopped 22 shots to help Tampa Bay snap a six-game losing streak.
Two nights after losing 4-3 at Florida, the Lightning tied the season series between the intrastate rivals at two games apiece. The home team has won each.
Hlavac and St. Louis scored less than 7 minutes into the game for a 2-0 lead.
Kamil Kreps replied in the second period for the Panthers, and Tomas Vokoun finished with 30 saves.
In other games it was:
* Red Wings 3, Predators 2, SO
* Blackhawks 5, Blue Jackets 2
* Avalanche 4, Oilers 3, SO
