Jaromir Jagr assisted on New York's three power-play goals in the first period as the Rangers handed Washington its first loss of the season, 3-1, on Friday.

In what looked like a mismatch, the Rangers brought in an anemic power-play unit that had failed in all 15 chances over the season's first three games.

Washington had not allowed a power-play goal in 12 short-handed situations while jumping to a 3-0 start.

That all changed quickly as Scott Gomez, Martin Straka and defenseman Michal Rozsival connected in the first period when the Rangers were handed six power-play chances.

Alex Ovechkin had answered Gomez's goal with his 100th career goal in just 167 NHL games.

    Blackhawks 3, Red Wings 2

In Detroit, Robert Lang scored the tiebreaking goal in the third period against his former team, helping Chicago record a road win over Detroit.

Brent Seabrook had a goal and an assist, and Patrick Sharp scored for Chicago, which trailed 2-0 after the first period.

Henrik Zetterberg and Kris Draper scored for Detroit, which lost in regulation for the first time this season.

    Blues 4, Avalanche 1

In St. Louis, Dan Hinote scored two goals in the third period as St Louis downed Colorado.

Goalie Manny Legace made 24 saves to improve his career record against the Avalanche to 12-1.

Brad Boyes scored his fourth goal for the Blues, who extended their winning streak to three games and are 3-1-0 for the first time since 1997-98. Jay McClement had the other St. Louis goal.

    Flames 3, Stars 2, OT

In Dallas, Matthew Lombardi scored twice, including the overtime winner, and Calgary rallied to down Dallas and record its first victory of the season.

Lombardi took possession of the puck deep in the Dallas zone after a turnover. He then beat Dallas goaltender Marty Turco at 3:20 of overtime.

    Canucks 5, Oilers 2

In Edmonton, Alex Burrows scored a short-handed goal in the second period and Vancouver rebounded from a poor outing two days earlier with a victory over Edmonton.

    Bruins 8, Kings 6

In Los Angeles, Phil Kessel recorded his first career hat trick and Boston beat Los Angeles in the only meeting between the teams this season.

Aaron Ward also scored for Boston, Milan Lucic got his first NHL goal and Glen Murray added a power-play goal before setting up the game-winner.
