Julio Baptista scored with an overhead kick and Raul Gonzalez converted a penalty to move Real Madrid back atop the Spanish league with a 2-0 victory over Real Betis on Thursday.
Substitute Baptista timed his jump to connect with a looping ball and beat goalkeeper Ricardo in the 85th minute.
``Baptista played well and I'm happy for him and his lovely goal. Sometimes you have to seek out those games and the moments when you get in'' Madrid manager Bernd Schuster said.
unbeaten
Raul gave Real the lead in the 67th, slotting the ball into the right side of the net from the penalty spot to keep Madrid unbeaten in five games since the start of the season.
Madrid improved to 13 points, one more than Villarreal and Valencia, and two more than FC Barcelona, all of which won their fifth-round games on Wednesday. Winless Betis are 18th with two points.
Schuster attributed the victory to his second half changes.
With the pace dropping by the 59th, Schuster brought on Robinho and Arjen Robben for Gonzalo Higuain and Javier Saviola, who had filled in for Ruud van Nistelrooy.
"The changes proved pretty important. The team had a lot more pace and life with the entry of Robben and Robinho," Schuster said. "It's nice to have these options ... thanks to them we were able to win the game."
Robinho appeared to have scored in the 67th, but the goal was ruled out because of David Rivas' foul on Raul, who then converted the resulting penalty.
Robben beat Ricardo from the left in the 71st only to put the ball wide of the far post.
Rafael Sobis' free kick from the corner of the area deflected onto the crossbar by Mahamadou Diarra soon after. Mark Gonzalez then hit the post on Betis' next attack.
Robben had another chance, but his goal was offside in the 77th.
Wesley Sneijder and Gabriel Henize returned after both missed Madrid's 1-1 draw at Valladolid on Sunday.
curling free kick
Ricardo got his fingers to Sneijder's curling free kick in the 32nd to tip it over the crossbar.
Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas managed to slow Edu's point-blank shot in the 34th, and Gonzalez sent the rebound high as the Madrid defense recovered quickly.
David Odonkor hit the post in the 38th and Edu tested Casillas with a long curling shot in the 41st as the team from Seville pushed for the equalizer.
"We created chances. Three times they disappeared because of the post," Betis' Argentinian coach Hector Cuper said.
"We have a negative dynamic. We need spirit moving forward," he said.
Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
Taiwanese judoka Yang Yung-wei on Saturday won silver in the men’s under-60kg category at the Asian Judo Championships in Hong Kong. Nicknamed the “judo heartthrob” in Taiwan, the Olympic silver-medalist missed out on his first Asian Championships gold when he lost to Japanese judoka Taiki Nakamura in the finals. Yang defeated three opponents on Saturday to reach the final after receiving a bye through the round of 32. He first topped Laotian Soukphaxay Sithisane in the round of 16 with two seoi nage (over-the-shoulder throws), then ousted Indian Vijay Kumar Yadav in the quarter-finals with his signature ude hishigi sankaku gatame (triangular armlock). Rafael Nadal on Wednesday said the upcoming French Open would be the moment to “give everything and die” on the court after his comeback from injury in Barcelona was curtailed by Alex de Minaur. The 22-time Grand Slam title winner, back playing this week after three months on the sidelines, battled well, but eventually crumbled 7-5, 6-1 against the world No. 11 from Australia in the second round. Nadal, 37, who missed virtually all of last season, is hoping to compete at the French Open next month where he is the record 14-time champion. The Spaniard said the clash with De Minaur was
