Taiwan's "golden pair" Chien Yu-chin and Cheng Wen-hsing made the history on Sunday when they captured the Yonex Taipei Badminton Open women's doubles title in Hsinchuang, Taipei County.
The pair beat their Indonesian counterparts Lilyana Natsir and Vita Marissa 21-15, 17-21 and 21-18 in a hard-fought final. It marked the first time that the Chien and Chung had claimed a five-star level tournament victory.
Both Chien and Cheng were jubilant over their win.
"The success came as a surprise to me. In the past, we got to semi-finals at best. I dared not expect too much before the start of the final," an emotional Cheng said at a post-match press conference.
Coach Cheng Chun-yen said the pair are big match players and that he would help them win at least a bronze medal at next year's Beijing Olympic Games.
