In Pittsburgh, Tom Gorzelanny allowed one run over seven effective innings as Pittsburgh handed Chicago its fourth loss in five games.

The Cubs are tied for the NL Central lead with Milwaukee, just half a game ahead of St Louis, with all three losing on Friday.

Gorzelanny (14-7) has allowed just two earned runs in 22 innings over three career starts for a 0.82 ERA against Chicago.

Reds 11, Brewers 4

In Cincinnati, a six-run first inning set up a comfortable win for Cincinnati over Milwaukee.

Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 593rd career homer in the second for the Reds.

Cincinatti's Bronson Arroyo gave up just three runs in seven innings to record the win.

Mets 11, Astros 3

In New York, Lastings Milledge made a diving catch to help thwart a potential rally, then hit a three-run homer that punctuated New York's rout of Houston.

Mets' starter Mike Pelfrey (2-7) allowed only two runs in five innings for his fourth career victory.

Carlos Beltran's solo homer off Wandy Rodriguez (8-13) in the fifth made it 4-2 Mets. Moises Alou then doubled and scored on a single. New York broke it open with six runs in the sixth.

Diamondbacks 4, Cardinals 2

In Phoenix, Brandon Webb (15-10) earned his 15th victory and Arizona kept St. Louis from moving into a first-place tie in the NL Central.

The victory moved the Diamondbacks two games clear atop the NL West.

The Cardinals' Adam Wainwright (13-10) lost for the first time in five starts.

Rockies 10, Padres 4

In Denver, Kaz Matsui hit a two-run homer as Colorado beat San Diego with a bevy of relievers after starter Elmer Dessens was injured.

The Rockies closed within three games of the wildcard-leading Padres and remained five games behind Arizona in the NL West.

Dessens left the game with one out in the third inning after straining his left hamstring. The Rockies then used nine relievers -- with the 10 total pitchers setting a franchise record for a nine-inning game.

Giants 5, Dodgers 4

In San Francisco, Dan Ortmeier hit a game-winning solo homer in the bottom of the ninth inning as San Francisco ended an 11-game home losing streak to Los Angeles.

The Dodgers blew a chance to gain a game on the Padres in the NL West and wild-card standings, staying 2.5 games back in both races.

Braves 7, Nationals 1

In Atlanta, John Smoltz came close to a no-hitter, but had to be satisfied with win for Atlanta over Washington.

The only pitcher in baseball history with at least 200 wins and 150 saves, Smoltz had the crowd on its feet when he walked to the mound to begin the eighth. He got ahead in the count, but Ronnie Belliard lined to rightfield to end Smoltz's attempt at his first career no-hitter.
