Frederic Kanoute scored a hat trick and Renato added two more goals for Sevilla to beat Real Madrid 5-3 and lift the Spanish Supercup for the first time on Sunday.
Sevilla won the annual trophy, which pits the league champion against the Copa del Rey winner, by a 6-3 aggregate score, having won last week's first leg 1-0.
Sevilla's victory at Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu Stadium continued the club's most successful period in its history. The Andalusian team have won consecutive UEFA Cup titles together with the European Supercup and the Copa del Rey. Sevilla face AC Milan in this season's European Supercup on Aug. 31.
Royston Drenthe, Fabio Cannavaro and Sergio Ramos replied for Madrid, who were seeking their eighth Supercup triumph since the competition began in 1982.
Pepe, Madrid's recently acquired Brazilian central defender from FC Porto, was ejected in injury time after receiving his second yellow card.
Madrid's defeat was a blow to their new German coach Bernd Schuster, a former Madrid midfielder who replaced the sacked Fabio Capello after the team won the league title in June.
Brazilian midfielder Renato opened the scoring from close range in the 17th minute after Christian Poulsen took advantage of a parry by Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas to fire the ball across goal.
Madrid's recent signing from Feyenoord, Netherlands Under-21 international Drenthe, equalized in spectacular fashion with a fierce long-range shot which hit the underside of the bar and bounced over the line seven minutes later.
Renato then doubled his tally in the 29th with a glancing header from Sergio Duda's cross.
The home team's plight worsened in the 38th when Kanoute, who missed the first leg through suspension, converted his spot kick after Pepe's handball.
The fifth goal of the first half arrived in the 45th when unmarked Cannavaro ran in to meet an outswinging cross by Netherlands midfielder Wesley Sneijder, who joined Madrid from Ajax last week.
Ramos, a former Sevilla defender, drew Madrid level with a 78th-minute header from a free kick by substitute Jose Maria "Guti" Gutierrez.
Right back Daniel Alves, whose transfer to Chelsea last week was halted when the clubs failed to agree on a fee, helped Sevilla restore its lead in the 82nd with a low cross which Kanoute slid home.
The Mali international completed his hat trick in injury time from a cross by substitute Enzo Maresca.
AS Roma beat Inter Milan 1-0 to win the Italian Supercup for only the second time on Sunday.
Daniele De Rossi converted a penalty in the 78th minute.
Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
Taiwanese judoka Yang Yung-wei on Saturday won silver in the men’s under-60kg category at the Asian Judo Championships in Hong Kong. Nicknamed the “judo heartthrob” in Taiwan, the Olympic silver-medalist missed out on his first Asian Championships gold when he lost to Japanese judoka Taiki Nakamura in the finals. Yang defeated three opponents on Saturday to reach the final after receiving a bye through the round of 32. He first topped Laotian Soukphaxay Sithisane in the round of 16 with two seoi nage (over-the-shoulder throws), then ousted Indian Vijay Kumar Yadav in the quarter-finals with his signature ude hishigi sankaku gatame (triangular armlock). Taiwanese gymnast Lee Chih-kai failed to secure an Olympic berth in the pommel horse following a second-place finish at the last qualifier in Doha on Friday, a performance that Lee and his coach called “unconvincing.” The Tokyo Olympics silver medalist finished runner-up in the final after scoring 6.6 for degree of difficulty and 8.800 for execution for a combined score of 15.400. That was just 0.100 short of Jordan’s Ahmad Abu Al Soud, who had qualified for the event in Paris before the Apparatus World Cup series in Qatar’s capital. After missing the final rounds in the first two of four qualifier
