A young woman from Taitung County has won two gold medals in two world judo championship tournaments held during the past week, a female judo coach at the Chihpen Elementary School said on Monday.
Huang Li-feng said that faculty and students of Chihpen Elementary School were proud that Chien Tzu-hui, an alumnus who was formerly a member of the school's judo team, had won a gold medal in the women's under-48kg class in the 2007 Pacific Rim Judo Championships, held between July 27 and July 29 in Macau, and the 2007 Taipei Open Judo, held on Saturday and Sunday at the Taipei Gymnasium.
Chien, 18, graduated this year from the National Taitung University Affiliated Physical Education Senior High School. Her achievements have earned her the nickname, "Honorable Black Pearl," partly because of her dark skin.
More than 200 athletes from 22 countries took part in the 2007 Pacific Rim Judo Championships. Four of Chien's teammates also won medals in the competition.
