Taiwan wins Dresse and Maere Cup

Team Taiwan took gold at the Dresse and Maere Tennis Cup in Munich, Germany, on Saturday when they defeated the home team by two matches to one in the finals.

Taiwan was led by Ho Chiu-mei (何秋美), who won the bronze medal at the 1994 Asian Games in Hiroshima, Japan, and who was representing Taiwan in a deaf tennis tournament for the first time. She and her sister, Ho Chiu-hsiang (何秋香), won the final match against Germany's Tatjana Hebing and Heike Albrecht 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. The sisters' victory ensured that Taiwan's women's team made a winning debut in the eight-team competition.

The final round did not start off well, as Lai Yu-chen (賴妤甄), the third member of Taiwan's three-woman team, was dominated by Hebing 1-6, 0-6 in the first singles match. But it was Chiu who stepped up in the second match, winning her match with Albrecht 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 to set up the final.
