Taiwan's Lin "the Beast" Chieh-chih made an incredible seven 3-point baskets against Qatar last night in a 75-70 victory at the Jones Cup basketball tournament in Sinjhuang.
The first period began with the teams trading baskets, with Taiwan scoring on two strong inside plays and a 3-pointer by guard Chen Shih-nien. Three minutes into the period, Taiwan took a 9-4 lead, but Qatar got back into the game at the free throw line and on a fast break with a jam and a layup.
Taiwan countered with a jam of its own with 3:30 left in the first quarter, but Qatar tied the game at 16 with 2:30 left. Lin hit the first of his 3-pointers with a minute left to make the score 21-19 to Taiwan. A free throw by guard Yan Che-yi finished out the scoring in the quarter with Taiwan leading 22-19.
Qatar tied it on a 3-pointer after a minute had gone by in the second quarter and went ahead on an inside jam with 8 minutes left in the period. Nice defensive work by center Tseng Wen-ting was followed by a Taiwan inside bucket at the other end to even up the score at 24.
A beautiful reverse layup by Chen Hsin-an left Taiwan trailing 29-31 until around a minute was left in the quarter, but a 3-pointer by Lee Hseuh-lin followed by an inside bucket put Taiwan 34-31 up.
The third quarter opened with guard Yang Che-yi driving to the basket and getting hammered to the floor, drawing a foul and converting a free throw to make it 35-31. A fast break by Qatar with two minutes gone made it 35-33, but Taiwan scored on a three by Lee to make it 38-35. The Beast then took over, scoring on four 3-pointers to run the Taiwan lead up to 61-52 as the quarter ended.
Qatar clawed back in the fourth quarter with scrappy inside baskets and free throws to cut Taiwan's lead to 63-61 with six minutes left before Yang got the home side going again with a tough inside bucket.
Lin cooled off, missing his third 3-pointer of the period with 4:30 left to play. Qatar kept things close from the free throw line as Taiwan missed shots, leaving the score 66-64 with three minutes left.
Tseng Wen-ting finally gave Taiwan some breathing space with a basket off a hard drive with 20 seconds left. Fouled on the play, Tseng made the free throw to make it 72-68.
Another Tseng free throw was followed by a Qatar layup to make the score 73-70 with eight seconds left. Two more free throws in the final seconds gave Taiwan a hard-fought 75-70 win.
Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The

Taiwanese gymnast Lee Chih-kai failed to secure an Olympic berth in the pommel horse following a second-place finish at the last qualifier in Doha on Friday, a performance that Lee and his coach called “unconvincing.” The Tokyo Olympics silver medalist finished runner-up in the final after scoring 6.6 for degree of difficulty and 8.800 for execution for a combined score of 15.400. That was just 0.100 short of Jordan’s Ahmad Abu Al Soud, who had qualified for the event in Paris before the Apparatus World Cup series in Qatar’s capital.
