Taiwan holds off HK in Macau

CNA , WITH STAFF WRITER

The Taiwan men's soccer team on Tuesday held Hong Kong to a 1-1 draw at the East Asian Football Championship preliminary round, which is taking place in Macau until Sunday.

After beating Guam 10-0 on Sunday, Taiwan once again smelled victory on Tuesday when Huang Wei-yi (黃瑋儀) put Taiwan ahead with a 51st-minute header from the penalty spot on a high pass from Chen Po-liang (陳柏良), but Hong Kong managed to level the score five minutes later.

Leader of the pack

The draw means that the group winner will be decided later today, but since Taiwan beat Guam 10-0, a Hong Kong win with anything less than 10 goals in their match against Guam today would put Taiwan at the head of the group.

If Taiwan wins the group, the team will play the winner of the second group in the preliminary round -- consisting of Macau, Mongolia and North Korea -- in a final at 6pm on Sunday to decide which of the six teams will be going to Chongqing in China's Sichuan Province in February next year for the East Asian Football Championship finals.

The match for third place will be played on Sunday at 3pm, while the match for fifth spot will be played on Saturday, also at 3pm.
