West Indies name Gayle as captain for one-day series

Allrounder Chris Gayle will take over the captaincy from Daren Ganga of the 14-man West Indies cricket squad for the limited-overs series against England starting later this month.

Gayle, the powerful left-handed opener and right-arm offspinner, was named captain on Thursday when acting Test skipper Ganga was not included in the squad by the West Indies Cricket Board.

Ramnaresh Sarwan was initially expected to lead West Indies for the three one-day internationals and two Twenty20 matches but he was forced home when he injured his shoulder while fielding in the second Test at Headingley.

The one newcomer in the squad is Austin Richards Jr, a left-handed opener from Antigua.

It will be the first international outing for the 23-year-old Richards, who has played 10 first-class matches and made 682 runs at an average of 37.88. His highest score is 183, and he has played for West Indies A.

The selectors recalled all-rounder Dwayne Smith and right-handed opener Lendl Simmons, who both played in the World Cup but were dropped from the Test team.
