Meszaros' shot off Malik's stick seals Ottawa victory

Andrej Meszaros' bank shot off the stick of New York Rangers defenseman Marek Malik snapped a third-period tie and lifted the Ottawa Senators to a 3-2 victory in the NHL on Tuesday.
Meszaros rushed up the slot and took a shot that connected with Malik's stick, hit the right post and caromed past Henrik Lundqvist at 8:48. The defenseman hadn't scored in 21 games.
Ottawa, which erased a 2-0 deficit in the second period, improved to 10-4-1 in its last 15 games. Jason Spezza and Daniel Alfredsson added goals, and Ray Emery made 32 saves for the Senators. He blocked Martin Straka's backhander in front with 40 seconds left.
Michael Nylander scored twice for New York, and Lundqvist stopped 30 shots.
Hurricanes 3, Panthers 1
At Raleigh, North Carolina, Cory Stillman, Rod Brind'Amour and Scott Walker scored to lead Carolina past Florida.
The Hurricanes are competing for the eighth playoff spot in the Eastern Conference without goalie Cam Ward, who injured his left knee on Sunday. John Grahame made 26 saves in Ward's place.

At Dallas, Mike Modano became the second U.S.-born player to score 500 goals, and the 39th in NHL history, leading the Stars to a victory over Philadelphia.
The 36-year-old beat Antero Niittymaki on a rebound at 9:36 of the third period to move within two of Joe Mullen for the career lead among American players.
Modano joined Brendan Shanahan, Jaromir Jagr, Joe Sakic, Peter Bondra, Mats Sundin, Teemu Selanne and Mark Recchi as active 500-goal scorers.
Penguins 5, Sabres 4, SO
At Pittsburgh, Sidney Crosby scored the deciding goal in the shootout as the Penguins celebrated the announcement that they're staying in Pittsburgh for the next 30 years with a victory over Buffalo.
Erik Christensen also scored in the shootout, Crosby had a goal and two assists, Ryan Whitney added three assists and Sergei Gonchar a goal and an assist for the Penguins, who are 4-0-1 in their last five games.

At Montreal, the New York Islanders are hoping their playoff push includes Rick DiPietro. The star goaltender suffered a head injury late in the opening period of the Islanders' loss to Montreal.

At Toronto, Nik Antropov scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period, leading Toronto past Tampa Bay.

At San Jose, California, Bill Guerin scored his first three goals for San Jose and Evgeni Nabokov fell three-and-a-half minutes short of posting his fourth shutout in five games in a victory over Chicago.

At Vancouver, British Columbia, defenseman Brent Burns scored in overtime to lead Minnesota past the Canucks.
