Olympic butterfly champion Otylia Jedrzejczak went on trial yesterday for causing the car accident that killed her younger brother in late 2005.
The 23-year-old Jedrzejczak is charged with unintentionally causing the crash that killed her 19-year-old brother Szymon, Plonsk regional court judge Radoslaw Jarosinski said.
Jedrzejczak faces up to eight years in prison if convicted.
TVN24 television showed footage of Jedrzejczak entering the courthouse in a black jacket and black and white cap. The swimmer did not speak with journalists.
On Oct. 1, 2005, Jedrzejczak tried to overtake several cars on a two-lane road near Plock, about 40km northwest of Warsaw. In an apparent attempt to avoid an oncoming car, she swerved into a ditch before slamming into a tree.
She suffered minor spinal injures and a head wound, while her brother was fatally injured.
