Cobras left scratching heads
Ivanon Coffie, the third baseman for the recently sold Macoto Cobras team, appears to have won the title "biggest head in Taiwanese baseball," the Chinese-language United Evening News said.
Coffie, originally from the Netherlands, has been in Taiwan for about two weeks and is yet to find a batting helmet that will fit him. Although the team has great hopes for Coffie and the power he is capable of producing at the plate, his cumbersome head size has kept him from batting during team workouts.
Lin "Mountain Boar" Hung-yuan (林鴻遠), who plays left field and uses the largest helmet available, tried to squeeze his own helmet onto Coffie's head on Wednesday, but to no avail. Batting coach Sun Chao-li (孫昭立) told assistants to call the helmet factory and see if it had any especially large models available.
The Chinese Taipei Baseball Association also confirmed that former Macoto Cobras head coach Kuo Tai-yuan (郭泰源) will lead the national team at the Asian Baseball Championship at the end of this year, as well as the qualifier for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Lu, Hsieh lose in tennis
After winning his singles match on Tuesday, Taiwan's Lu Yen-hsun (盧彥勳) dropped his doubles match with Korea's Lee Hyung-taik versus Scott Lipsky and David Martin from the US at the SAP Open in California. Hsieh Su-wei (謝淑薇) also had a tough second round at the Bangalore open, losing to Hungary's Melinda Czink 4-6, 7-6, 7-5.
