Scrumhalf Alessandro Troncon was named in Italy's Six Nations squad on Tuesday, after almost two years out for the Azzurri.
Troncon, a former captain and Italy's most capped player, will compete with Paul Griffen for the No. 9 jersey ahead of the team's tournament opener against France on Feb. 3 in Rome.
Troncon, 33, won the last of his 90 caps in Italy's 56-13 loss to France in March 2005.
"The doors of the national team are open to everyone," Italy coach Pierre Berbizier said. "Our common goal is to keep building a team for the World Cup ... Troncon is included in that vision."
Also recalled to the squad of 24 players were winger Denis Dallan, who missed the latter half of last year through injury, and prop Salvatore Perugini, who returns from suspension.
Lock Marco Bortolami continues as captain.
Also on Tuesday, the Italian rugby federation unveiled its new sponsor, Italian bank Cariparma, which has signed a three-year deal with the Azzurri, starting next month.
Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
