Two-time defending champion Inter Milan advanced to the semi-finals of the Italian Cup on Wednesday, beating Empoli 2-0 in the second leg of its quarter-final.
Esteban Cambiasso scored in the 28th minute with a volley on Mariano Gonzalez's assist. Italy left back Fabio Grosso added the second in the 76th with a stunning strike from range to send Inter to the next round with a 4-0 aggregate victory.
Empoli forward Mirco Gasparetto missed a penalty in the 30th after Inter midfielder Olivier Dacourt fouled Eder.
In the semi-finals, Inter will face Sampdoria, which beat Chievo Verona 2-1 earlier on Wednesday to advance 3-1 on aggregate.
Emiliano Bonazzoli gave Sampdoria the lead in the 42nd minute from close range, but Michele Marcolini equalized with an acrobatic volley two minutes later.
Sampdoria's fourth goalkeeper Carlo Zotti, who replaced Luca Castellazzi in the 34th, thwarted Chievo three times in the second half and Gennaro Delvecchio scored the winner with a header in the 85th.
Also, Chile midfielder David Pizarro scored a late equalizer to earn an understrength AS Roma a 2-2 draw with Parma. Roma, runner-up the past two seasons, progressed to the last four, winning 4-3 on aggregate.
