Federations express unity
International volleyball's national federations yesterday expressed their unity in recognizing the international volleyball federation as the sole governing body for volleyball and beach volleyball. On the opening day of the 30th FIVB World Congress in Tokyo, all 31 members of the FIVB board of administration signed a declaration recognizing FIVB as the only worldwide governing body of the two sports. Jean-Pierre Seppey, a former FIVB general manager, is leading a breakaway group that is setting up a rival volleyball federation. Seppey was fired from his post in August for what FIVB said was embezzling funds through false expense claims to finance a life of luxury.

America break drought
America ended nearly six years without a win against Pumas at Azteca Stadium with a 2-0 victory in the Mexican League on Sunday. Cuauhtemoc Blanco scored in the 32nd minute, and three minutes later Paraguayan Salvador Cabanas doubled the lead for America, which hadn't beaten Pumas at Azteca since Oct. 29, 2000. Guillermo Ochoa made the score stand with an excellent game in goal. With the victory, America has 24 points, two behind soccer league leader Toluca. Atlas and Cruz Azul had 23 each, and Chiapas 22. In Toluca, Josue Castillejos' goal was enough for Diablos to beat winless Santos 1-0, despite playing with nine regulars. Toluca's Argentine coach Americo Gallego decided to rest most of his side for the a Copa Sudamericana quarter-final against San Lorenzo in Argentina on Wednesday.

England put France away
England winger Mark Calderwood scored two tries as his side easily defeated France 26-10 in the opening match of their Federation Shield campaign in leeds on Sunday. Leeds duo Lee Smith and Jamie Jones-Buchanan were also try scorers as Paul Cullen's team dominated throughout against a lackluster French side, made up mostly of players from Catalans Dragons.

No `Hingis effect' in Zurich
The Zurich Open failed to reach its goal of attracting 40,000 spectators, despite the return of Martina Hingis to professional tennis. Organizers said on Sunday that they had sold 35,638 tickets through the week. "I don't think Martina had a big effect on attendance," tournament director Beat Ritschard said. "The `Hingis effect' didn't prove itself." Hingis, who made her comeback this season after about three years of retirement, made her first appearance in six years at the tournament in Switzerland.. The former top-ranked Swiss player reached the quarterfinals, where she was eliminated by third-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia. "Financially, it wasn't a catastrophic scenario. We almost broke even," Ritschard said.

Ducks out-shootout Kings
Ryan Getzlaf faked out backup goalie Mathieu Garon and scored the winning goal in the fifth round of a shootout, helping the streaking Anaheim Ducks beat the rival Los Angeles Kings 3-2 in the NHL on Sunday. Getzlaf skated slowly toward Garon and faked to the right before pausing and going left, catching Garon sprawled flat on the ice for the Ducks, who won their third straight for their best start in franchise history. Alexander Frolov struck first for the Kings in the shootout, beating Jean-Sebastien Giguere through his pads. Teemu Selanne answered for Anaheim, going top shelf on Garon's left side before Getzlaf settled things in the fifth round. Giguere earned his fifth victory, stopping 29 shots in regulation and the five-minute overtime.

MLB labor deal agreed on
US Major League Baseball players and team owners have reached a tentative agreement on a five-year labor contract, an individual with knowledge of the negotiations said on Sunday. The deal, which was struck during bargaining in New York on Friday and Saturday, is still subject to the two sides formally putting the agreement in writing, the person said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the agreement had not been finalized. Lawyers were working on the agreement's language on Sunday and they hoped to put the finishing touches on it yesterday and today. Once that happened, commissioner Bud Selig would announce it in St. Louis at the World Series, the source said. The current deal, set to expire on Dec. 19, was agreed to in August 2002, just hours before players were set to strike.

Fasth wins Mallorca Classic
Niclas Fasth shot a 2-under 68 on Sunday for a three-stroke win over Sergio Garcia at the Mallorca Classic in Spain. The Swede finished at 5-under 275 and Garcia, the 2004 winner, shot 68 to finish second in back-to-back years. "I had an average sort of summer, but over the past four weeks or so I have felt that my game has been coming together and it is fantastic to win again," said Fasth, the tour's only wire-to-wire winner this year. "Any win is great but, coming up the last with a three-shot lead, I was able to enjoy the last hole, which you don't get to do all the time." Jose Manuel Lara (67) and Marc Warren (70) tied for third, four shots behind Fasth. Fasth, who also won the Spanish Open in April, bogeyed the ninth but had birdies at the par-5 10th and par-4 14th.
Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
Taiwanese judoka Yang Yung-wei on Saturday won silver in the men’s under-60kg category at the Asian Judo Championships in Hong Kong. Yang defeated three opponents on Saturday to reach the final after receiving a bye through the round of 32. He first topped Laotian Soukphaxay Sithisane in the round of 16 with two seoi nage (over-the-shoulder throws), then ousted Indian Vijay Kumar Yadav in the quarter-finals with his signature ude hishigi sankaku gatame (triangular armlock). Taiwanese gymnast Lee Chih-kai failed to secure an Olympic berth in the pommel horse following a second-place finish at the last qualifier in Doha on Friday, a performance that Lee and his coach called “unconvincing.” The Tokyo Olympics silver medalist finished runner-up in the final after scoring 6.6 for degree of difficulty and 8.800 for execution for a combined score of 15.400.
