Charges dropped against Culpepper in sex-party case

    AFP, MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA
    Thursday, Apr 06, 2006, Page 20

Quarterback Daunte Culpepper was cleared of misdemeanor charges stemming from a chartered cruise that allegedly turned into a sex party last year.

The Miami Dolphins acquired the three-time Pro Bowl quarterback from the Minnesota Vikings on March 15 for a second-round pick this year.

Now Culpepper can play for his new National Football League team with no distractions after a US judge cleared him of any misdemeanor charges on Tuesday.

Culpepper was one of four members of the Vikings accused of misdemeanor lewd conduct while on a cruise boat in Lake Minnetonka on Oct. 6.

Culpepper maintained his innocence all along.

However, Judge Kevin Burke denied a motion on Tuesday to dismiss charges against running back Moe Williams of the Vikings.

The other two players charged -- cornerback Fred Smoot and tackle Bryant McKinnie -- will have hearings today.

Two boats that had been chartered by Smoot and defensive end Lance Johnstone were ordered back to shore less than an hour into the trip, which was scheduled for three and a half hours, amid accusations of lewd acts possibly involving strippers and prostitution.

Crew members complained that some people took off their clothes and engaged in public sex acts during the cruise.

Sex acts were allegedly performed in front of employees, who were fearful for their safety.
