Steve Begin scored a short-handed goal 1:14 after Jaromir Jagr tied it for New York in the third period, and the Montreal Canadiens got four third-period goals to beat the New York Rangers 4-1 on Monday night and earn a split in the home-and-home series.
Saku Koivu gave Montreal a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal 47 seconds into the third period. Jagr answered nearly nine minutes later with his NHL-best 12th goal, scored while the Rangers were on a 5-on-3 power play. Begin restored the Canadiens' lead with 9:06 left. Two-time Rangers player Alex Kovalev made it 3-1 with 3:46 left, and Niklas Sundstrom added an empty-netter in the final minute.
Maple Leafs 2, Panthers 1
At Toronto, Alexei Ponikarovsky scored the go-ahead goal midway through the third period and Toronto rebounded from its worst loss in nearly 14 years.
Ed Belfour made 31 saves for the Maple Leafs, who lost 8-0 to the rival Ottawa Senators on Saturday night -- their most lopsided loss since Dec. 26, 1991, when Pittsburgh beat them 12-1.
Fans booed after Florida's Gary Roberts needed just 26 seconds to score against his former team.
