Jonathan Hurst's eight innings of one-run ball helped the Brother Elephants beat the red-hot La New Bears in a 6-3, series-opening win at Kaohsiung on Tuesday.
The victory cooled off the streaky Bears, winners in 10 of their past 12 games, and kept the Elephants in the hunt for the second-half title at three games behind the league-leading Macoto Cobras.
Hurst, who carried a shutout into the eighth inning for his team before surrendering a solo home run to La New slugger Lin Chih-sheng, allowed a run on seven hits, while fanning six and walking three for his team-leading ninth win of the season.

The game began with the Elephants striking first in the top of the second when right fielder Hsu Chih-wei's sharp grounder went through the five-hole of La New third baseman Victor Rodriguez to score the runner on third for the Elephants' first run of the game, before first baseman Hsu Ming-lan followed with an RBI single to shallow-left to put the Elephants up 2-0.
The Elephants would double their lead an inning later on run-scoring singles by third baseman Wang Jin-yong's and catcher Chen Rei-chang to chase Bears starter Lee Fong-hua before a sudden downpour called for a temporary delay in the top of the fourth.
Neither club was able to cross the plate after the rain delay until the top of the eighth, when Hsu Chih-wei and Hsu Ming-lan delivered again for their team on consecutive scoring drives, this time off La New reliever Hsu Chih-hua to give the Elephants a comfortable 6-0 advantage.
After Lin's homer off Hurst broke up the shutout in the eighth, the Bears would add a pair of runs off Elephants reliever Hsiao Ren-wen in the ninth to make it 6-3 before closer Wu Bao-shien got Lin to pop out at short to end the game.
La New starter Lee (the normal setup man for the Bears) lost for the first time in just his third start this season over a subpar performance. The league's Pitcher of the Month in August yielded four runs on seven hits in 2-1/3 frames as he fell to 3-4 for the year.
Bears 3, Elephants 2
Pan Chung-wei's game-winning solo blast off Elephants reliever Wu Bao-shien in the bottom of the eleventh broke a 2-all tie in Kaohsiung on Wednesday as the home Bears overcame a two-run deficit to win by a 3-2 final.
Second baseman Chu Hong-seng got the Elephants on the board with a two-run single off Bears starter Chris Wright in the top of the third and saw the Bears half the 2-0 lead in the bottom of the same inning on shortstop Shih Chih-wei's sacrifice fly to deep-center.
La New would knot the game up at 2-all in the bottom of the fourth, this time on another sacrifice fly by catcher Chen Fong-ming that scored Pan, who led off the inning with a single and took third base on a double by Venezuelan newcomer Eduardo Rios.
Wright looked sharp in his fourth straight start, giving up a pair of runs on six hits while striking out a season-high nine over 10 solid innings. He missed the win by an inning as game-winner Hsu Wen-hsiung started the eleventh in relief of Wright after he had thrown 132 pitches in a 2-2 deadlock.
Wu, who had saved the day for the Elephants with Tuesday night's win, was dealt the tough loss for allowing the game-winner on Pan's late-game heroics.
Cobras 14, Lions 0
In a makeup contest between the Macoto Cobras and the President Lions at Luodong on Monday, the Cobras blanked the Lions in a 14-0 decision that marked the worst beating of the year for the big cats.
The battle between two top rookie pitchers, Lin En-yu of the Cobras and Lin Yueh-ping of the Lions, never lived up to its billing because of a five-run first by the serpents offense that knocked out Lin Yueh-ping before he could even complete the first inning.
While Lin Yueh-ping struggled devastatingly for the Lions, the Cobras' Lin En-yu turned in his best effort in nearly a month by tossing a three-hit, complete-game shutout for his team-high 12th victory. The clear front runner for this year's Rookie of the Year honor has won two in a row after dropping back-to-back decisions for the first time this season in a rather forgettable month of August.
Offensively for the serpents, every starter on the lineup collected at least one hit for the first time this year in a slugfest that included 17 hits and six drawn walks. Five of the Cobras batters had multi-hit games, led by third baseman Wilton Veras' 3-for-5 night with three RBIs.
Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
Taiwanese judoka Yang Yung-wei on Saturday won silver in the men’s under-60kg category at the Asian Judo Championships in Hong Kong. Nicknamed the “judo heartthrob” in Taiwan, the Olympic silver-medalist missed out on his first Asian Championships gold when he lost to Japanese judoka Taiki Nakamura in the finals. Yang defeated three opponents on Saturday to reach the final after receiving a bye through the round of 32. He first topped Laotian Soukphaxay Sithisane in the round of 16 with two seoi nage (over-the-shoulder throws), then ousted Indian Vijay Kumar Yadav in the quarter-finals with his signature ude hishigi sankaku gatame (triangular armlock). RALLY: It was only the second time the Taiwanese has partnered with Kudermetova, and the match seemed tight until they won seven points in a row to take the last set 10-2 Taiwan’s Chan Hao-ching and Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova on Sunday won the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix women’s doubles final in Stuttgart, Germany. The pair defeated Norway’s Ulrikke Eikeri and Estonia’s Ingrid Neel 4-6, 6-3, 10-2 in a tightly contested match at the WTA 500 tournament. Chan and Kudermetova fell 4-6 in the first set after having their serve broken three times, although they played increasingly well. They fought back in the second set and managed to break their opponents’ serve in the eighth game to triumph 6-3. In the tiebreaker, Chan and Kudermetova took a 3-0 lead before their opponents clawed back two points, but
Taiwanese gymnast Lee Chih-kai failed to secure an Olympic berth in the pommel horse following a second-place finish at the last qualifier in Doha on Friday, a performance that Lee and his coach called “unconvincing.” The Tokyo Olympics silver medalist finished runner-up in the final after scoring 6.6 for degree of difficulty and 8.800 for execution for a combined score of 15.400. That was just 0.100 short of Jordan’s Ahmad Abu Al Soud, who had qualified for the event in Paris before the Apparatus World Cup series in Qatar’s capital. After missing the final rounds in the first two of four qualifier
