Italian dies in one-day race
Italian cyclist Alessio Galletti died Wednesday of heart and lung failure during a one-day race in northern Spain. The 37-year-old Galletti, of the Naturino-Sapore De Mare team, was riding in the 39th edition of the Subida al Naranco between the town of Lugones and the Alto de Naranco mountain, race organizers said. He collapsed 12km from the finish and was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital in Oviedo, but he was declared dead on arrival, organizers said. Earlier, he had complained of pain in his chest. Galletti, born in the Italian city of Pisa, turned professional in 1994 and achieved four wins during his career, the last one in 2003. He was also a teammate of former world champion Mario Cipollini for four seasons when he was riding for Saeco.

Killer sentenced to 35 years
A former Baylor University basketball player who admitted to the 2003 killing of a teammate was sentenced to 35 years in prison by a Texas court on Wednesday. Carlton Dotson, 23, made a surprise guilty plea last week to charges he shot to death Patrick Dennehy. He did not speak during the sentencing hearing in the central Texas city of Waco, a court official said. Dotson had faced a sentence of five years to life behind bars. A state judge had ruled Dotson incompetent to stand trial last October, then reversed the decision and scheduled a trial for this month. Dennehy, a 2.08m center, disappeared on June 12, 2003, and his badly decomposed body was found more than a month later a few kilometers from the arena in Waco where Baylor plays basketball games. The killing eventually led to the resignation of coach Dave Bliss after scrutiny of the basketball team revealed illicit payments to athletes and drug violations.
