Emil Brown hit a two-run homer and the Kansas City Royals beat Randy Johnson for the first time in 12 years, handing the New York Yankees their fourth straight loss with a 3-1 victory on Wednesday.
D.J. Carrasco (1-1) threw six shutout innings for his first major league win as a starter and Buddy Bell improved to 2-0 as Royals manager, with both wins coming against the Yankees. The Royals had not won a series against the Yankees since Aug. 11-13, 2003.
Johnson (5-4), who has 251 major league wins, had been 9-0 with one save and a 3.03 ERA in 14 games -- all wins by his teams -- since he last lost to the Royals on May 21, 1993. Mike MacDougal allowed Bernie Williams' homer and Robinson Cano's double in the ninth before striking out Derek Jeter to record his fourth save.
Tigers 6, Rangers 4
In Detroit, Brandon Inge's tiebreaking, two-run single in a five-run seventh inning helped Detroit end Texas' nine-game winning streak.
Texas had a 4-1 lead until Detroit rallied in the seventh, chasing Ryan Drese (4-5) with four straight hits and an error on the pitcher. Inge, the first batter to face Doug Brocail, hit a single to right past a drawn-in infield.
Jeremy Bonderman (6-3) gave up four runs and 10 hits while striking out six and walking none in 7 1-3 innings. Ugueth Urbina struck out the side in the ninth for his ninth save in 11 opportunities.
Orioles 9, Red Sox 3
In Boston, Miguel Tejada and Sammy Sosa hit back-to-back homers and Geronimo Gil added a three-run shot as Baltimore thrashed Boston.
Sosa's homer was his fifth of the season, first since April 24 and 579th of his career, leaving him four behind Mark McGwire for sixth place on the all-time list.
Tejada added three doubles and scored three runs for the Orioles, who won for only the second time in six games.
Sidney Ponson (6-3) had a shutout until allowing three unearned runs in the seventh inning.
Tim Wakefield (4-5) lost his fourth consecutive start, a span in which his ERA is 8.74.
Angels 10, White Sox 7
In Chicago, Dallas McPherson hit a go-ahead RBI double in a four-run seventh inning, and Los Angeles avoided a three-game sweep against Chicago.
McPherson also homered for the Angels, who rebounded from tough ninth-inning losses on Monday and Tuesday. In the seventh, Kevin Walker (0-1) walked leadoff hitter Chone Figgins, who went to third on a hit-and-run single by Darin Erstad and scored on Steve Finley's game-tying single.
After Erstad moved to third on a fly, McPherson sliced a double to left, giving the Angels a 6-5 lead.
Paul Byrd (5-4) allowed five runs and six hits in six innings, striking out six and also giving up a two-run homer to Aaron Rowand in the first.
Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez was activated from the disabled list earlier Wednesday and pitched the ninth, his first appearance since he strained his right forearm May 14. He gave up a hit and three straight walks. he also struck out the side.

In Minneapolis, Torii Hunter had a career-high five hits and matched his career-best with six RBIs to lead Minnesota over Cleveland.
Hunter put the Twins ahead 4-2 in the third inning with a grand slam to left off Cliff Lee, the fourth of his career.
Brad Radke (5-4) pitched seven strong innings to get the victory. He allowed two earned runs and six hits with no walks and six strikeouts.
Lee (6-3) went five innings, allowing four earned runs and nine hits. He walked two and struck out six.
