The Yankees completed a three-game sweep of the Royals, who have dropped four in a row and 14 of 17. Joe Torre got his 800th win as Yankee manager.
Mussina (2-4) gave up two runs, but did not allow a hit after the fourth inning. Mariano Rivera got his ninth save in nine chances.
Jorge Posada scored in the seventh inning on the single by Matsui, who later came home on Ruben Sierra's sacrifice fly to complete the scoring.
Jason Giambi homered off Jeremy Affeldt (0-3) for his fifth this season.

In St. Petersburg, Florida, Rocco Baldelli hit a two-run homer and Mark Hendrickson pitched six solid innings, helping Tampa Bay snap a six-game losing streak.
Baldelli connected against Tim Hudson (3-1), making it 4-1 with a two-run shot in the third.
Hendrickson (1-2) allowed two runs and six hits.
Eric Byrnes homered for Oakland, which has dropped nine of 13.

In Minneapolis, John Lackey pitched seven strong innings, and Jose Guillen's tiebreaking, two-run single in the eighth gave Anaheim its eighth win in 10 games.
Michael Cuddyer homered for Minnesota, its only run in the last two games.
Lackey (2-3) allowed six hits in seven innings, striking out five for his second straight win.

Garland (2-1) scattered 10 hits and struck out five. Billy Koch pitched the ninth for his third save.
