Ten-man Algeria pulled off a shock 2-1 win over four-times champions Egypt in the African Nations Cup on Thursday and Patrick Mboma scored a hat-trick as Cameroon beat Zimbabwe 5-3.
Substitute Hocine Achiou weaved his way through the Egypt defence and thumped the winner past Nader El Sayed in the 86th minute after Mamar Mamouni had earlier put Algeria ahead before being sent off.
Ahmed Belal equalised in between for Egypt.
In the other match, 33-year-old Mboma, who received a late call-up for the Indomitable Lions, took his tally in the tournament to four goals as Cameroon came from behind to trounce their southern African opponents.
Cameroon and Algeria have four points each from two games, Egypt have three points and Zimbabwe have none.
Egypt will almost certainly have to beat Cameroon on Tuesday to qualify while a draw against Zimbabwe will send Algeria through.
Algeria's win, in a fixture marked by a long history of trouble, delighted their supporters who had poured across the nearby border and began arriving at the ground hours before kick-off.
The game was played amid tight security but there were several incidents of Algerian fans throwing plastic bottles on to the running track around the field.
Egypt were often a class above their opponents and the match appeared to be theirs for the taking when Mamouni shoved Ahmed Hassan and received his second yellow card.
Mamouni had headed Algeria in front from a corner in the 13th minute before Belel ran on to an incisive pass by Tarek El Sayed and chipped in the equalizer in the 25th minute.
Egypt then took control the game and missed a flurry of chances but relaxed with their one-man advantage.
Algeria appeared resigned to a draw as they left Abdelmak Cherrad on his own up front but with four minutes left, striker Achiou sent the crowd wild as he scored the winner with a brilliant individual effort.
Defending champions Cameroon had been held 1-1 by Algeria in their opening match and the holders' campaign went from bad to worse with Zimbabwe skipper Peter Ndlovu's eighth-minute header.
But Mboma promptly hit two and made another for midfielder Modeste Mbami to put Cameroon firmly in the driving seat, despite Ndlovu scoring from the penalty spot two minutes after the re-start.
Mboma then completed his hat-trick and Mbami added his second of the afternoon as the Lions ripped Zimbabwe's defence to shreds.
Esrom Nyandoro scored a late third consolation goal for Zimbabwe.
"I'm pleased with the team's performance, despite the fact that we conceded three goals, perhaps through a lack of concentration and that really is a shame because goal difference could be important in the third match," Mboma said.
Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The
Taiwanese judoka Yang Yung-wei on Saturday won silver in the men’s under-60kg category at the Asian Judo Championships in Hong Kong. Nicknamed the “judo heartthrob” in Taiwan, the Olympic silver-medalist missed out on his first Asian Championships gold when he lost to Japanese judoka Taiki Nakamura in the finals. Yang defeated three opponents on Saturday to reach the final after receiving a bye through the round of 32. He first topped Laotian Soukphaxay Sithisane in the round of 16 with two seoi nage (over-the-shoulder throws), then ousted Indian Vijay Kumar Yadav in the quarter-finals with his signature ude hishigi sankaku gatame (triangular armlock). Taiwanese gymnast Lee Chih-kai failed to secure an Olympic berth in the pommel horse following a second-place finish at the last qualifier in Doha on Friday, a performance that Lee and his coach called “unconvincing.” The Tokyo Olympics silver medalist finished runner-up in the final after scoring 6.6 for degree of difficulty and 8.800 for execution for a combined score of 15.400. That was just 0.100 short of Jordan’s Ahmad Abu Al Soud, who had qualified for the event in Paris before the Apparatus World Cup series in Qatar’s capital. After missing the final rounds in the first two of four qualifier
