Mark Messier set up the Rangers' first two goals and Jussi Markkanen withstood a penalty shot and a sizable Pittsburgh shots advantage to beat the Penguins 4-1 Saturday.
Two excellent passes by Messier set up goals by former Penguins forwards Dan LaCouture in the first period and Petr Nedved in the second to help the Rangers close a 3-1 road trip that began with victories in Phoenix and Los Angeles.
"Pittsburgh plays hard, and we knew they would come back," LaCouture said. "We wanted to get back [to a multiple-goal lead] as quickly as we could."
Jed Ortmeyer and Bobby Holik also scored for the Rangers. Eric Meloche, who missed the penalty shot, scored the lone goal for Pittsburgh.
Markkanen turned aside the other 40 shots he faced as Pittsburgh led 41-27 in shots.
"If it hadn't been for Jussi, then we probably could have lost the game," Rangers coach Glen Sather said. "He played very well, stopped a couple of breakaways, stopped a penalty shot. He was real sharp."
Canadiens 5, Thrashers 1
In Montreal, Richard Zednik and Joe Juneau each had a goal and an assist to lead the Montreal Canadiens over the Atlanta Thrashers.
Jose Theodore stopped 27 shots and came within 4:50 of a shutout before allowing Chris Tamer's goal at 15:10 of the third with Montreal up 4-0.
Jan Bulis, Mike Ribeiro and Niklas Sundstrom also scored for Montreal, which extended its unbeaten streak to three.
Senators 5, Capitals 2
In Ottawa, Daniel Alfredsson and Bryan Smolinski scored two goals each and Ottawa extended its season-high unbeaten streak to nine games.
Alfredsson snapped a tie with a power-play goal 4:53 into the third period. He put Ottawa up by two with his second goal of the game.
Smolinski, who tied it in the second, got his second of the game with 1:21 remaining -- the first of two empty-net goals scored within 19 seconds.
Chris Neil scored the other empty-netter for Ottawa, which has won four in a row and is 7-0-2 over the course of the streak.
Jeff Halpern and Robert Lang scored for Washington, winless in five (0-4-1).
Maple Leafs 3, Sabres 3
In Toronto, Matt Stajan scored the tying goal with 3:02 left in regulation and Toronto rallied to tie Buffalo.
Down 3-1 in the third period, Toronto's Mats Sundin scored a power-play goal before Stajan tipped Ken Klee's slap shot past Martin Biron. Toronto outshot Buffalo 37-16.
Miroslav Satan, Chris Drury and Rory Fitzpatrick scored second-period goals for the Sabres, who have a point in five of six games.
Biron made 34 saves.
Gary Roberts also scored for the Maple Leafs, who have won just one of four games since earning at least one point in a team-record 16 straight games.
Bruins 3, Islanders 3
In Boston, Trent Hunter and Adrian Aucoin scored four minutes apart midway through the third period, helping the New York Islanders tie Boston.
New York is 6-1-1 in its last seven games, while Boston dropped to 1-5-5 in its last 11 home games.
The Bruins' Patrice Bergeron scored a power-play goal late in the second period, and Sandy McCarthy made it 3-1 early in the third, before Hunter and Aucoin struck.
