Italy's Alessandro Petacchi of Fassa Bortolo won his second stage Wednesday after a riveting downhill sprint in the fifth stage of the Tour of Spain.
The Italian, winner of four stages in this year's Tour de France and six during the Giro d'Italia, took 3 hours, 19 minutes, 26 seconds to complete the day's 166.7km, descending 835m from Soria to Zaragoza. Cyclists bunched into a mass sprint that broke apart just 1km short of the finish line when Alessandro Cortinovis sustained a bad fall, delaying those in the latter part of the pack. Angel Edo and Julian Dean came in second and third, while Erik Zabel came in fourth.
