Argentina and Brazil split soccer golds, Cuba started to dominate in boxing and the US won most of the medals in swimming at the Pan American Games.
Brazil played for gold Friday in both the men's and women's soccer finals, but Argentina took the men's title 1-0 while Brazil topped Canada 2-1 in extra time for the women's title.
Striker Maximiliano Lopez scored for the Argentine men, who won the gold for the seventh time. Cristiane Silva scored a golden goal just 21 seconds into extra time for the Brazilian women.
"I was simply in the right place at the right time," Silva said before chanting, "Beautiful Brazil! Beautiful Brazil!"
Miraildes Mota gave Brazil a 1-0 lead, but Canada captain Kristina Kiss equalized.
The match was postponed from Thursday, when heavy rain left the pitch waterlogged and unplayable after 24 minutes.
Mexico won both bronze medals. The Mexican men beat Colombia 5-4 in a penalty shootout after a 0-0 draw, and the women topped Argentina 4-1.
Cuba took four of six boxing golds with Yan Bartelemi, Guillermo Rigondeaux, Mario Kindelan and Lorenzo Aragon each winning. In the other two bouts, Cubans lost to Rudecindo Goben of Mexico and Jason Estrada of the US.
In the swimming pool, the US also won four of the six gold medals offered. American Michael Raab won the men's 200m butterfly in 1 minute, 57.33 seconds, a Pan American Games record, while Peter Marshall won the men's 100m backstroke in 55.52.
Revelations of positive doping tests for nearly two dozen Chinese swimmers that went unpunished sparked an intense flurry of accusations and legal threats between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the head of the US drug-fighting organization, who has long been one of WADA’s fiercest critics. WADA on Saturday said it was turning to legal counsel to address a statement released by US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) CEO Travis Tygart, who said WADA and anti-doping authorities in China swept positive tests “under the carpet by failing to fairly and evenly follow the global rules that apply to everyone else in the world.” The

Taiwanese gymnast Lee Chih-kai failed to secure an Olympic berth in the pommel horse following a second-place finish at the last qualifier in Doha on Friday, a performance that Lee and his coach called “unconvincing.” The Tokyo Olympics silver medalist finished runner-up in the final after scoring 6.6 for degree of difficulty and 8.800 for execution for a combined score of 15.400. That was just 0.100 short of Jordan’s Ahmad Abu Al Soud, who had qualified for the event in Paris before the Apparatus World Cup series in Qatar’s capital.
