The Budweiser Kings slow-pitch softball team won the Club Division of the ninth Pangaea Cup Tournament in Manila on Sunday with a stellar pitching performance from Dan "Grinch" Grindell and consistent hitting throughout the lineup.
The Kings' pitcher shut out the Tokyo Tigers 11-0 in the final of the unlimited arc tournament, handing the second-place team its only loss of the weekend.
Grindell won the tournament's Most Valuable Player honors by winning six games in the three-day tournament as the Kings went undefeated.
"It's a team game," Grindell said. "Everybody played well." The Kings, who recently won the Sanchung league they regularly play in, pounded the Hong Kong Turkeys in the semifinal 18-11.
The team swept the individual awards in their eight-team division as Grindell also won Best Pitcher and shortstop Keith Dishart took the Gold Glove.
The Kings' offense was propelled by Chang Yu-Chen and Rick France, who both hit six home runs in the tournament.
In the Super Division, Taiwan's 3N2 team had its streak of three consecutive titles snapped when they lost in the semifinals.
The Guzzlers, a team from South Korea, took first place, beating KC Dot Fat Boyz from Singapore in the final.
3N2 won its consolation game to claim third place. "We just had one bad game offensively," said Jamie Storvick, who organized the 3N2 team. "But three firsts and a third isn't bad."
