China's shipping bosses in Taiwan

A group of Chinese shipping industry heavyweights arrived in Taipei yesterday to glean first-hand information about the nation's shipping market.

Group members included Wei Jiafu, president of China Ocean Shipping Group (中國海運集團), which is one of China's largest shipping companies, and Gao Weijie, the company's executive vice president.

Wei said after his arrival at CKS International Airport that he and his associates were invited by a local maritime transport research association to see Taiwan's major harbor facilities and the general situation of its shipping industry.

"This is my first trip to Taiwan. I have long hoped to visit Taiwan. In addition to visiting major Taiwan ports, I'll also meet with my friends here. I have many friends in Taiwan's shipping circles," Wei said, adding that he would also pay courtesy calls to his company's major Taiwan clients.

Asked about his views on Taiwan's recent opening of direct sea-air links between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait, Wei said he hoped that full-fledged direct cross-strait shipping services could be opened in the not-too-distant future.

China Ocean Shipping Group maintains cooperative ties with Taiwan's Yangming Marine Transport Corp (陽明海運) and Evergreen Marine Corp (長榮海運).
