Two electric-powered buses were handed over to the Taichung City Government yesterday in an attempt to cut air pollution in the city.
Taichung Mayor Chang Wen-ying (張溫鷹) said the electric-powered buses have low chassis, which means they will be more convenient for the elderly and the disabled to board and get off.
Chang said most of the passengers were satisfied with the performance and comfort of the new buses, which have an average speed of 60kph and can accommodate 30 passengers.
The Environmental Protection Administration, which subsidizes the program, said the advantage of using electric-powered buses is a reduction in pollution caused by diesel emissions.
The EPA said that during the six-month test run of the new buses in Taichung, careful assessments regarding the weather, roads, and passenger reactions will be conducted.
The EPA added that if the test run of the new buses, scheduled to begin Jan. 3 on major roads in Taichung, proves successful, it hopes that other cities and towns nationwide will follow suit by adopting the use of electric-powered buses to help Taiwan enter a new low-pollution era.

Tropical Storm Podul strengthened into a typhoon at 8pm yesterday, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said, with a sea warning to be issued late last night or early this morning. As of 8pm, the typhoon was 1,020km east of Oluanpi (鵝鑾鼻), Taiwan’s southernmost tip, moving west at 23kph. The storm carried maximum sustained winds of 119kph and gusts reaching 155kph, the CWA said.
