Kidnap attempt on lawmaker's son thwarted by police

STAFF WRITER

A failed attempt to abduct a legislator's son came to light yesterday, sending shock waves though the legislature's staff.

Police arrested Chiu Min-liang (裘敏良), 42, in Taichung County late Thursday night for attempting to kidnap the son of KMT Legislator Tseng Tsia Mei-tso (曾蔡美佐) earlier this month.

Police said Chiu pretended to be a friend of Tseng's and lured her son to Taipei's Ambassador Hotel along with her driver.

Chiu demanded NT$120,000 from Tseng as ransom and later decided to take Tseng's son back to the Legislative Yuan to pick up the money, but fled without getting the ransom. Chiu continued to harass Tseng on the phone after the incident. Chiu was recorded by video surveillance cameras as he entered the Legislative Yuan.

Tseng held a press conference at her office in Peikang, Yunlin County, yesterday to explain what happened. Tseng said she had told her son on the phone to lure the suspect into the Legislative Yuan's premises so that he could be recorded by security cameras there. Police had kept the case secret until Chiu's arrest on Thursday night.
