Warship sunk off Toucheng coast to create artificial reef

A warship was intentionally sunk in waters off northeastern Taiwan's Ilan County yesterday to form an artificial reef and facilitate conservation of the island's offshore fishery resources.

Hu Hsing-hua, director of the Fishery Administration under the Cabinet-level Council of Agriculture (COA), said the inauguration of the artificial reef marks a new milestone in the conservation of Taiwan's offshore fishery resources.

Hu said that after the supply ship Wan-An was decommissioned in 1998, the COA immediately approached the Ministry of National Defense (MND) to seek its consent to use the vessel as an artificial shelf off Toucheng, Ilan County.

Liu urged Ilan fishermen to cherish the new facility and work together with the government to conserve fishery resources and boost fish catches.

Many Toucheng residents turned out to watch as the vessel was sunk into waters off the coast to become Taiwan's first such reef.
