Chen selects wide range of medical personnel to keep tabs on his health

CHANGE OF POLICY Breaking from tradition, the new president will have top-quality medical attention nearby no matter which part of the country he is visiting

President Chen Shui-bian's (陳水扁) medical team was announced yesterday, but unlike the past past practice of selecting a single doctor and hospital to tend to the president, this team includes 10 renowned doctors from seven hospitals.

Huang Fan-yen (黃芳彥), spokesman of the medical team and the associate director of Shin Kong Hospital (新光醫院), said this unprecedented team was mainly due to medical professionals' support for Chen.

"Everyone is eager to serve the new president," said Huang.

"Most of these hospitals have branches or associate hospitals around the country, and in response to this important responsibility, Taiwan's medical community will make medical services for Chen available everywhere," he said.

"This is bound to improve the quality of care of these hospitals and will promote improvements in the quality of service they provide," he said

Huang said Chen's health condition was excellent, and that doctors would be giving the president his first physical exam very soon.

Former president Lee Teng-hui (李登輝) used to have check-ups and medical treatment performed at National Taiwan University Hospital.

"Chen's first physical exam will follow past tradition and be conducted at National Taiwan University Hospital too," Huang said.

Huang added however, that in the future annual checks might be done at different hospitals.

The medical team is composed of Chen Kai-mo (陳楷模) -- surgeon, leader of the team and also the director of Cathay General Hospital, Dean of National Taiwan University's Medical College Hsieh Pao-sheng (謝博生) -- physician, director of National Taiwan University Hospital Lee Yuan-te (李源德) -- cardiovascular specialist, director of Veteran General Hospital Chang Mao-sun (張茂松) -- cardiac physician, director of Shin Kong Hospital Hung Chi-jen (洪啟仁) -- cardiac surgeon, director of Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital Chen Yu-jui (陳昱瑞) -- plastic surgeon, director of Mackay Memorial Hospital Huang Chun-hsiung (黃俊雄) -- orthopedic specialist, director of Tri Service General Hospital Chang Sheng-yuan (張聖原) -- urologist, and head of surgery at the National Taiwan University Hospital Chang Chin-chien (張金堅) -- surgeon, and Huang Fan-yen -- anesthesiologist.
